FDA Approves Generic Rogaine Foam (5% Minoxidil) by Perrigo for Hair Loss
Perrigo Company, the largest manufacturer of over-the-counter pharmaceuticals in the United States, recently announced FDA approval to produce a generic version of McNeil’s popular Men’s Rogaine Foam for hair loss. The new generic minoxidil foam is slated to become available in the United States on March 1, 2012. Currently only liquid minoxidil is available in generic form.
The benefits of Rogaine Foam over its liquid counterpart include:
- Faster drying
- Less scalp irritation
- Better absorption
This announcement has been highly anticipated by hair loss sufferers who prefer the benefits of foam but find purchasing Rogaine branded products cost-prohibitive.

Jeri,
That’s a good point. I’m not sure of a 2% Rogaine foam for hair loss in the works, but we’ll certainly keep you posted. While many women do use the 5% minoxidil solution, many still prefer the 2% as potential side effects are minimal.
Best wishes,

I wonder if they will ever come out with a 2% Rogaine foam. Unfortunately the 5% gives me a horrible headache so I’m stuck with the 2%, which is hard to apply (but at least it already comes in a generic).
