Rogaine Foam
Pfizer recently released Rogaine Foam, a hair loss treatment that features the active ingredient minoxidil. Rogaine Foam has a 5% minoxidil concentration like traditional Rogaine Extra Strength, so it is currently only available for use by men. A women’s formula is expected to hit shelves in the near future. Rogaine Foam comes in an aerosol spray can and has the consistency of traditional aerosol shaving creams such as Barbasol.
Minoxidil has been proven time and again to be an effective hair growth stimulator that can both maintain and increase scalp hair counts.
But if the existing lotion formula is effective, then why did Pfizer release a foam version of Rogaine? Well any existing Rogaine user can answer that question pretty easily.
The directions suggest that the traditional Rogaine lotion be applied twice a day for optimal results. These application times should be at least four hours apart. Common sense tells the hair loss sufferer that the best times to apply their Rogaine would be right after their morning shower and a little while before bed at night. However common sense probably never had to deal with that infamously greasy “Rogaine head.”
The traditional Rogaine lotion utilizes propylene glycol in the ingredients as the vehicle for delivering the active medication into the scalp. The problem, of course, is that propylene glycol leaves the hair and scalp with an awful greased-up texture and feel to it for what seems like hours after the application. The result is unflattering, to say the least. It leaves the hair looking matted down and even thinner than it really is – a hefty step in the wrong direction for a hair loss treatment. Even after it dries, the hair appears lifeless and limp. Obviously, this presents a problem for users that wish to apply their Rogaine in the morning just before they have to go to work. Another issue with propylene glycol is that it can irritate users’ scalps resulting in itching, flaking, and even peeling in some cases. Because of these effects, the use of traditional minoxidil solution wasn’t even a possibility for many hair loss sufferers.
Rogaine Foam delivers the minoxidil into the scalp in a manner that is just as effective as the traditional lotion, but without the mess or unpleasantness. The foam is designed to retain its “foamy” texture at room temperature but quickly liquefies, spurring quick skin absorption at body temperature. It is for this reason that Rogaine suggests users rinse the hand used for application under cold water before applying the foam.
My Review
I’ve used traditional Rogaine lotion for a few years now with good results. I feel that I have maintained and regrown lost hair in my crown and vertex some creative timing. The messy nature of the lotion did account for me blowing off some of my applications and sometimes I would simply make the two applications at no more than 5 hours apart, which is not ideal. So I was excited about the foam hitting the market. I’ve used it for just over a month now.
My impression is that the Rogaine Foam lives up to its hype. The application area of the scalp and the surrounding hair dries quickly and there is no residue left behind. My hair does feel a little stiffer after application, but I, for one, don’t mind this as it seems to actually have a bit of a thickening effect as well. But that may just be my own imagination.
The simple fact that I can apply my minoxidil in the morning without my hair looking as if I bathed in Crisco is reason enough for me to switch to the foam. The added benefit that my scalp doesn’t itch nearly as bad as with the solution is just one more huge benefit.
So I give the Rogaine Foam a “two thumbs up.” Though it doesn’t leave my hair exactly as natural-feeling as it would be had I used nothing, the texture that it gives my hair is not awfully unpleasant and isn’t a hindrance like its predecessor.

Rogaine has caused premature aging, bags under the eyes, and a slight disfiguration of my face. I stopped treatment a long time ago, and the effects remain. I am only claiming this happened to ME, I’m not saying it will happen to you. From my perspective it ONLY works well enough to keep consumers spending money on it, no more. In that sense it is the perfect drug, financially speaking. But BEWARE if you happen to be one of the people who absorb Rogaine very easily and use it in the front of your scalp: it has a great tendency to deform your face–do a search on Pseudoacromegaly. This review is based on my personal experience and carefully documented (with photos) fact.

Liquid minoxidil is known to leave hair looking greasy. If this is a concern, the best option is to switch to Rogaine Foam or a generic minoxidil foam. Foam based minoxidil products absorb and dry very quickly without leaving a greasy residue on the hair.
Another option is to apply minoxidil in the evening only.

I’ve just started using foligain 5% for men.. Liquid form.. But I have noticed it’s started to make my hair look wet and greasy after the application! Does this happen to anyone else and if so what else can I do to stop this? I’m applying the solution only to my scalp but it seems to be making the roots of my hair look wet and go greasy?
HELPPPPPP!!!
So embarrassing!!! This makes me not even want to keep using the product.. I don’t know what to do… Really discouraging me to use it!!

If you stop minoxidil, your progressive hair loss will resume and any hairs revived or regrown by the drug will shed. What’s more, because minoxidil is a preventive medication, other “hairs which were not stimulated by minoxidil” (as you put it) would be susceptible to hair loss as well. Essentially, if you stop using minoxidil, you will lose the hairs you’ve regenerated and expose yourself to future hair loss.

In my opinion and experience, Rogaine foam is considered more effective than it’s liquid counterpart due to its foam delivery system. In its own distinct study, Rogaine foam reports an impressive 85% hair regrowth success rate (if used as directed) which is approximately 20% higher than liquid minoxidil at only 64%.
That said, if you have concerns about Rogaine foam and want to switch to its liquid counterpart, it would certainly be better than stopping it altogether if it’s helping you to maintain any existing hair.
Keep in mind that the 5% solutions (foam or liquid) is only FDA approved for men while the 2% solution is approved for women. This is because women who use higher concentrations of minoxidil may experience unwanted facial or body hair growth. That said, many women use 5% minoxidil solutions with even higher success rates without experiencing any unwanted side effects.

It is perfectly safe to apply Rogaine Foam to the scalp twice daily as directed.
Rogaine Foam will not cause hair loss. However, as with any drug, there are potential side effects.
Before undergoing any medical treatment, it is best to consult with your physician.

Rogaine’s manufacturer recommends applying it twice daily in fairly evenly spaced intervals during the morning and evening. I am not a physician and cannot advise if there would be any potential harm in applying it with only a 5 hour interval but my guess is that there would be no harm in doing so.
In terms of its effect on hair growth, I do not think it would matter since many men report positive effects with only one daily application.
In short, it’s always bets to discuss any alteration in the drug dosing with your physician, even if it’s an over-the-counter medication like minoxidil.

It seems to me that there are these issues with 1) using Minoxidil, and 2) getting a hair transplant.
1 Minoxidil:
* Minoxidil makes the skin age faster in some. Loss of collagen may be the cause.
* Minoxidil may cause dark rings under the eyes. This may be systemic, or because of rubbing hair (dry, but still has residue of minoxidil on it) and face against the same pillow during the night.
* If you are in a couple, the partner can no longer move to your side during the night and share your pillow.. without risking to grow facial hair.
* According to the literatur, Minoxidil is hit and miss with many not positively affected by it.
2 Hair transplant:
* People who consider a hair transplant should not only consider the scar from strip or FUE… nor the cost… These are often the main concerns people have about getting a hair transplant.
However, the real and far more serious issue is whether they are willing to run the risk of using Propecia for life! Propecia has been shown to induce anxiety and depression in the majority of mice it was applied to. In humans we are now started to see these affects and these side effects have recently been added to the insert. Impotence is another. And a 2012 article demonstrates that it may be permanent impotence even after Propecia is stopped.
This is the real issue with getting a hair transplant. Because if a client is not willing to run the risk of Propecia.. then the hair transplant will look very strange once more hair falls off and the hairs from the transplant are standing alone like islands.
I myself would get a hair transplant in a second if a safe alternative to Propecia that could almost guarantee that the remaining hair would be kept. Or if stem cell techniques means that I could have ‘safe’ hairs transplanted to the entire forehead and scalp.
But as long as I have to rely on Propecia for a hair plant to be a real option… I don’t want to run the huge
risk and play with hormone therapy like Propecia.
But the day some safe solution is found.. I don’t see why the millions of bald men around the world wouldn’t get a hair transplant. There is a reason why clever guys like Bruce Willis wont run the risk, while less clever people like Wayne Rooney just jumps into it. Bruce will probably get onboard once it can be done safely…

There is really no way to know just how much hair will regrow after stopping and then restarting Rogaine (minoxidil). However, the general consensus is that once a medical hair loss treatment is stopped and hair loss is allowed to progress at its natural pace again, restarting the drug will rarely return the hair to its former state.
More than likely, a portion of the hair that you’ve lost will not return. But, it’s still a good idea to get back on Rogaine and to keep using it until a better solution becomes available.
You may also find that adding Propecia (finasteride) to your regimen will help greatly.

It appears I was wrong, as I noticed a major increase in hair loss about two months after starting treatment. First, I recommend speaking to a dermatologist or hair loss expert to determine what’s causing the hair loss.

There is no reason why Rogaine foam won’t work for men in their forties. In fact, this age demographic makes up a large percent of successful Rogaine users. If you’re considering the treatment, I highly recommend discussing your hair loss with a trusted physician and seriously considering minoxidil.

Hi Blake, I have not experienced any growth at all since I’ve been using minoxidil for 8 months, it has seriously made my hair fall out a lot faster (i know this due to tracking my hair with pictures since i started and it has destroyed my hairline, which hasn’t grown back). Since i started propecia my hair already looks better and feels more natural, so i seriously do not want to go back to regaine because of these reasons.
Obviously regaine does not work for everyone so i think I will just carry on with propecia.

You’re correct – if you stop minoxidil, you will lose any growth caused by the medication. Have you considered using the minoxidil with finasteride (Propecia)?
Keep in mind that Propecia is usually associated with an initial shedding phase (up to 4 months) which can make your hair look “thinner” during initial usage, but will reverse and improve the hair loss from that point forward.

We truthfully cannot confirm whether or not these are legitimate pills. Frankly, I recommend taking the medications to a physician and “double checking.” Furthermore, I’d probably receive a legitimate prescription from a physician and pick up the medication from a trusted pharmacy in the future.

Hi, I have a question about stopping regaine/ rogaine. I have been using this product for about 8 months with no success (it has actually made my hair a lot thinner), so i have decided to stop it and use propecia instead. I have read online that stopping regaine will mean you lose the hair you gained, but i have not gained any, what are your thoughts?

You have not yet fully passed the shedding period. We advise anyone using Rogaine to continue using the treatment as directed for between 6 months and one year before assessing their results.
There is no danger of permanent hair loss due to Rogaine. You have nothing to lose by continuing the treatment until you can be sure of its effects.

Congratulation! I’m happy to hear that Rogaine is working for you. Six weeks is much too early to see nay new hair growth. It will take at least 3 to four months for new hairs to begin sprouting. You should continue to use minoxidil for up to one full year before assessing your results.

Fincar and Finpecia are just as effective for hair loss as Propecia as long as you are purchasing them from a reputable source.
It’s perfectly normal to experience a shedding phase after starting finasteride. Don’t worry, the drug does not cause permanent hair loss. The shed hairs will regrow in about three to four months’ time.
The small white bulb you are noticing is probably just sebum. It’s perfectly natural and nothing to be concerned about.

and I read almost all the comments and found that my case is perfectly the same as Maria’s case.
My shedding was started at the 1st day of using Minoxidil and going for about 1 month

A good news is its been 6 weeks of using regaine and its really working for me.
My hair fall has stopped drastically. But have no signs of new hair growing. But at the moment, I am really happy with this product.

I do not know if Rogaine or generic minoxidil 5% is available in Hong Kong or Singapore. However, in Australia, the product is known as Regain. Click here for their official website. I suspect that Regaine or a generic equivalent can be found in the local pharmacy.

While minoxidil based topicals (Rogaine, Regaine, etc.) are clinically tested and proven effective in the midscalp and vertex area, many hair restoration experts believe it can also be useful in the frontal third and hairline region. Because of this, it’s probably a good idea to utilize the solution in all balding regions. Additionally, I’d investigate further battling your loss with finasteride (Propecia) as well.

I recommend restarting a minoxidil regimen. If you’re having side effects from finasteride (Propecia), then utilizing minoxidil is definitely your best chance at reversing and halting your progressive hair loss.
As far as the 8 hour window is concerned, I would highly suggest following the recommended usage and schedule, but if you do need to modify it, I think you should design a plan with a physician (preferably a dermatologist or hair restoration physician). Additionally, I don’t think I’d utilize the 10% minoxidil. The 5% solution is what’s proven safe and effective, so I do think this is what you should use.

hello sir,
I am 28 years old living in delhi and I started loosing my hair 5 years back.During the first two years of my treatment i used various homeopathic oils as well as oral homeopathic medicines but they were really of no use.I wasted a lot of money and time in this useless medications before I switched to minoxidil 5% in the third year of my treatment. I tremendously gained with the use of minoxidil twice a day with full head of hairs.But in the fourth year due to busy schedules I could not continue with the 5% lotion and started losing my hair again at a fast rate.I then switched to Finasteride pills and halted my hair fall but started losing my sexual drive as well.I have stopped the consumption of finasteride for the past 1 year after using it for over an year and regained my interest in sex.
My question is that
1)Should i again continue using minoxidil which once had proved so helpful to me.Will it again work at me just as it had once worked.
2)I am concerned about the dosage interval.I at max get a gap of 8 hours to apply minoxidil twice daily.Would it work on applying minoxidil at a gap of only 8 hours
3)I have came to know about minoxidil 10 % and also that an extra strength minoxidil as compared to 5% or 2% is more beneficial.IS it so and is it safe to apply minoxidil 10%.
(I know the experience i have shared is quite large….but please be needfull to me as I am yet a Bachelor and yet to marry in a country like India where Hairs Plays a Vital Role in the selection of a Bride and a Groom)

Unfortunately, there is no way to know if your Rogaine is still effective past its expiration date. While there is likely no harm in applying it, it may not benefit you to do so.
I recommend that you replace those bottles with new ones.

If you’re looking for a shampoo to actually help battle the potential hair loss, I recommend looking at a product containing ketoconazole (like Nizoral). If you’re looking for a shampoo to simply keep your hair healthy, it’s really all a personal preference.
Additionally, remember that the most useful preventive products you can utilize are minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia). However, many people believe that adding a ketoconazole based shampoo to this regimen is truly helpful.

I have not contacted a dermatologist mainly because where I moved to is a temporary location and I haven’t even established a doctor here. (Moving away is a large part of what I am thinking is contributing to my hair-loss) Of course now I am considering finding a doctor. I received the Minoxidil about 10 days ago and have been applying it thought it isn’t my favorite thing to do. My shedding is or is greater than it was before. Many hairs noticeably coming out when I rub my hair or when I run my hand through my hair with either water or a leave in conditioner. I would say the number is around 10-15 but I guess could be more if I would continue running my hand through my hair…
When my hair is completely dry the thin hair is not too terribly noticeable but I think that is in part that my hair is couple inches long now, however I’m starting to need a haircut and am wondering how it will look once it is cut. If I pull my hair up and look across the base of my scalp the distance between hairs looks much greater than I’m thinking it should, but then again before I thought my hair was falling out I wasn’t near as observant.
I’ve been reading about TE and am hoping that is what is causing the rapid fallout thinking that eventually growth will more closely equal loss. Nearly all the hairs falling out are what I believe to be normal in diameter but do contain the white bulb on them. From what I understand the white bulb means the hair is essentially dead. I’m just hoping all the hairs on my head don’t contain the white bulb and are just waiting to fall out. Is there any sort of shampoo that could help with my problem? I’m currently using an over the counter shampoo that says for dry and damaged hair. Is there something better I should be using?

It’s really not possible to say. Only time will tell. However, stopping Rogaine for two weeks should not greatly impact your results.
There are other causes of hair loss. Since you were in hospital, you may have experienced hair loss due to stress, illness or even medication. This type of hair loss is known as telogen effluvium and is often temporary. However, it may take many months for your hair to return to normal.

Male Pattern Balding can happen slowly over a period of years or very rapidly in only a few months. Have you consulted with a dermatologist or other hair loss expert? It’s always best to do so rather than self-diagnosing.
I see that you have purchased a generic minoxidil. Have you started treatment yet? Topical minoxidil has a long and well-documented safety record. There is no harm in trying it. But, remember that you may experience increased shedding during the first 4 weeks or so. You will need to continue using it for a minimum of six months before assessing your results.
We have no information about the release date of a generic minoxidil foam but I recommend that you visit our hair loss forum regularly. When it becomes available you will see it here first.

Using Rogaine should not result in the permanent loss of healthy hairs. Starting a medical hair loss treatment typically results in an initial and temporary shedding of miniaturized, weak hairs which are eventually replaced with more robust growth. Some of these hairs may be lost permanently if they were very weak and about to die.
Genetic hair loss can happen slowly over a period of years or quite rapidly over a period of months. It is possible that your rapidly thinning hair coinciding with your application of Rogaine may simply be a coincidence. I recommend consulting with a dermatologist.
Stopping Rogaine will result in the eventual loss of any hairs grown by or retained by its use. In other words, you will experience catch-up hair loss. But, again, your normal, bald-resistant hairs will not be affected.

You have been a lot of help so I have a couple more questions.
1. My hair is actually falling out at the root. I use a leave in conditioner to try to make it healthier and after I spray my hair I run my fingers through it to even out the conditioner and there is always 3-10 hairs left on my fingers and hand, all with the white bulb attached. I am unsure how many come out during my showers cause I have brown tiles and its impossible to see them. I mention them coming out at the root because most of what I read says that male patterned baldness will be a slow thinning of each hair until they can’t grow anymore, not so much normal looking hairs just falling out. I feel that MPB should take years and at the rate I’m going I feel like I’ll be bald in 4-5 months.
2. Last question: Any word when generic Rogaine Foam will be released? I read March of this year but it was posted over a year ago and couldn’t find any updated info.

Hi, I have been using regaine since August 2011 due to having a receeding hairline. I have been applying to the temples and my frontal hairline with no positive success, in fact its actually destroyed my frontal hairline, when i thought regaine was meant to prevent more hairloss as well. I know you might say its not FDA approved but this site certainly tells people to try using regaine on the hairline anyway, which is why I did it only to lose a lot more hair. My question is this what will happen if I stop completly and what will happen if I continue using because last August in the middle of my hairline I had 100% thickness and now I can actually see my scalp.

In my opinion, stress can augment or possibly even initiate genetic hair loss, but I personally don’t believe that using Rogaine as a preventive measure during times of stress will be effective.
In my opinion, it’s likely that you would see positive results while using the Rogaine during the stress, but lose any progress after stopping (even if your stress levels dropped).
I’d personally recommend utilizing the Rogaine now and continue the regimen even after your stress subsides.

So what if I were to never use the Rogaine but my stress levels were to drop to a level that did not produce hair-loss. Does this mean my hair could potentially grow back? Or is hair-loss due to stress permanent?
I guess I’m still hinting at what if I used the rogaine as a temporary way to regrow hair until my stress level drops to where I should not lose hair. Is it at possible to have a full head of hair since my stress problem is more definitely not permanent. Maybe its impossible…

Hair loss mediated by stress should be viewed by the body as hair loss related to any other cause. Because of this, Rogaine foam (minoxidil) should cease and prevent the progressive loss (and I highly recommend using it).
If you stop the Rogaine, any growth and reversal you’ve had from the medication will, unfortunately, stop as well. This means that your hair loss will continue progressing and any new growth you’ve seen will fall out as well. In theory, if you restart the medication after this time, the growth would restart (though you would likely experience another “shedding phase” for the first 3-4 months on the medication).
As long as the active ingredient (minoxidil) in the generic Rogaine is the same, it will treat the hair loss as effectively as the “brand name” product.

I’m 25 and I believe my hair is thinning. I think it has accelerated due to stress. Will rogaine help if it is stress related?
If it was stress related and rogaine regrew hair what would happen if the stress eased, could I stop the rogaine and still have the hair? Also what happens if I stop using rogaine? I understand hair that it supposedly grew would disappear but would more hair? And if that hair did disappear could I just start right back up and it would be back?
Basically I ordered a generic form and before I try it once I want to make sure there are no long term damages that I could be getting into that I don’t completely understand. Thanks

Typically, Rogaine (minoxidil) is not as effective along the hairline and temples as it is in the crown. But, you have nothing to lose by trying and some patients have reported hair growth in this area.
In most cases, restoring the frontal third of the balding scalp is accomplished through hair transplant surgery.

I have been making very good progress in this period, however I have noticed my right side of my head *is thinning* even though my left side is a lot thicker. Though not a documented side effect, some men and women do report dark circles under the eyes with Rogaine (minoxidil) use. The good news is that many also report that this condition subsides with discontinuation of the drug.
If you wish to continue treating your hair loss with minoxidil, I suggest switching to the 5% solution. You may see a reduction in the appearance of black rings.

You may simply be experiencing the normal period of shedding associated with minoxidil. We recommend that hair loss sufferers continue to use Rogaine (minoxidil) for up to one year before assessing their results.
Even after more than a year of use, you may occasionally experience seasonal shedding. If your hair looks and feels fuller overall, continue to apply minoxidil as directed.
Should you discontinue use, any hair growth resulting from application of the drug will eventually be lost.

It’s not possible for me to say for sure if you are receiving any benefits from Rogaine Foam. However, in my opinion, hair loss sufferers should use the product for a minimum of 6 months and up to one year before assessing their results.
During that time, it’s advisable to take monthly photos. This will help you more objectively measure any changes in hair growth or density.
Shedding, while common, is not always present when starting Rogaine.

In your case, you should apply Rogaine over your entire scalp. I have found the liquid is a bit easier to apply on longer hair than the foam.
If you are using liquid minoxidil, I suggest placing the tip of the dropper against the scalp and placing a drop or two in several spots around the head and then massaging it into the scalp.
The foam will melt rapidly when it comes into contact with body heat. While some may be absorbed by the hair, I do not believe that it is a substantial barrier to its absorption in the scalp.

Liquid Rogaine tends to leave the hair feeling and looking greasy. The foam is much lighter and faster drying and should not cause your hair to appear lifeless and flat. In fact, some users find that it works similarly to a styling mousse.
I don’t have any particular products to recommend but I suggest trying a thickening shampoo. These are readily available at most pharmacies and grocery stores and they help add extra body to thin, lifeless hair. Additionally, I suggest testing out a variety of styling products.

I was just diagnosed with non-scarring alopecia and I am a female. I was told to try the 5% Rogaine. The directions say to apply directly to the balding area but I really don’t have a balding area, just rapidly thinning hair. What’s the best method for applying it? I’ve been using it but it just seems to be coating my hair, rather than getting to the scalp. Even parting my hair, it still seems to only be getting on the hair shaft. Suggestions? Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee that even proven hair loss treatments like Rogaine will work for you. However, at the very least, perhaps Rogaine and Propecia will slow your hair loss down. If you feel they’re not working for you, you can always stop. However, if they were in fact slowing it down and you stop taking these medications, hair loss may in fact progress faster.
I wish I could tell you that there was a sure way to tell if the medication is working to slow down your hair loss. However, unless it’s truly stopped it or you’ve restored hair, there’s really no way to know for sure.

Ok, so would one use this Propecia with Rogaine? Also, I ve lost bushels of hair over the past year since I started Rogaine but my hair never really seems to change. It’s difficult to say. You may be experiencing seasonal shedding or it may be that you are losing hair to the effects of DHT. As a vasodilator, Rogaine (minoxidil) is thought to regrow hair by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. It is not a DHT inhibitor like Propecia (finasteride). Thus, on its own it is not nearly as effective as it is when used in combination with Propecia.
The only way to know if this is temporary shedding is to continue to apply Rogaine twice daily for the next 4 to 6 months and see if your hair returns.

Hello, this is my 3rd time to post on here and I thank you for all of your answers. It has now been over a year since I started using Rogaine Foam. For probably 6 months everyone thought it was working myself included but it never seemed to completely fill everything back in. i started using Regaine solution 4 months back and today my hair loss not only stopped but also hair has covered almost all of my crown area where the balding process started and its proving to be a great product.
But on the other hand, i have started having itching temporarily specially when i apply it , and it becomes severe sometimes too. Can you give me solutions to that? any medicine or shampoo or other tips? i cant switch to foam because its not available here.

I am begining to see hair grow in my bald spot . Once you start using Rogaine foam is it 2x a day and dont skip a day . Only put the foam wear your balding . At first what I did I shaved my head then i waited for it to grow back a little . Then apply the foam on the main spot wear balding .
I put it on 2 x daily . I am seeing a diffrence . Give it about a week or 2 and you will se a diffrence . After 2 weeks , keep on applying it 2 x every day .

By “peeling” do you mean you have dandruff? Under normal conditions, dandruff does not lead to hair loss. However, the frequent irritation, inflammation and itching in the scalp resulting from this condition can cause a temporary shedding known as telogen effluvium until the condition is adequately treated.
Thus, I highly recommend seeking the advice of a dermatologist before applying anything to the affected area. Once you have your condition under control, you can begin to treat your hair loss.

I’m sorry, I can’t be any more specific than what I said in my first reply, “…it may take up to 4 months before you see regrowth.” At about 4 months, you should begin to see regrowth. Hair grows at an average pace of about ½” per month. Depending upon how long your hair is, it can take quite a while for things to even out again.
Typically, patients can expect shedding of weak and miniaturized hairs. These are hairs that have shrunken due to the effects of male pattern hair loss. Healthy hairs should not be affected.
I’m curious as to why you began using Rogaine if you are not sure you are losing your hair.

It’s quite normal to experience shedding in the first two months of starting Rogaine and it may take up to 4 months before you see regrowth. You used it long enough the first time to induce shedding but not long enough to see any benefits. Stopping it and starting it again may have prolonged the shedding phase.
In order to know if Rogaine will work for you, you should apply it twice daily for at least six months. You need to ride out the shedding phase. The weak and fine hairs that are lost during this period will be replaced with healthier hair follicles.
If you choose not to continue using Rogaine, the shed hairs will most likely return and your hair loss will continue to follow its normal progress. You should not end up balder for having used Rogaine.

While the shedding phase is typically 3 to 4 months, this is an estimate and not a rule. I recommend using Rogaine for at least six months before assessing your results.
Healthy hair will not become dependent on Rogaine so you should have nothing to lose in the long run. If you continue to apply Rogaine, the weak and fine hairs that you are shedding should eventually be replaced with fuller, darker hairs.

Increased facial hair growth is a known side effect of Rogaine. It is most common in women who use the 5% men’s formula or in those who take minoxidil orally.
While applying minoxidil topically should not produce strong systemic side effects, some patients do report facial hair and other side effects from Rogaine.
I suggest discussing your concerns with your doctor. If your side effects are systemic, then switching to the 2% solution may resolve the problem.

I’m a male with long hair, and its thinning… grrr would any hair growth from Rogaine ever become as strong and as long as real hair? I realise I may need to have my hair cut shorter than it is now.

I i started using regaine at the end of may this year after noticing my hair thinning. I now can see that my hair has gone so thin im breaking my heart. My hair is still shedding but i am having growth all over my head however im losing more than im growing and all newly grown hair seems to fall out so easy as they are weak. Please can you tell me with continued use this product will work

Hi im 22 yaers old and started thinning in january of this year so i decided to start using regaine foam at the end of may, ive got hair growing all over my head but im still shedding, my hair is very thin as i no regaine makes you your hair shed when starting treatment, im nearly 5 months in now ive noticed that some of the little peachy fuzzy hairs that have newly grown fall out very easily, also i seem to be losing more hair than im actually growing, could you please tell me if this product so far working and things will improve for me

A lot has changed since the first comment i posted 3 days ago…. It seems after 2-3 weeks of extreme shredding of my hair, it has now stabilised and now it looks like my hair that I have lost is now growing back, so there is no need to shave my head as i have loads of hair anyway. Also recently I only find the odd few hairs in the sink even when applying rogaine and if I run my hand through my hair I dont find any hairs which is great.
I might hold off on propecia if regaine is improving my hair, as i dont want to take another gamble with any more “shredding” and also the sexual side effects. I might change my mind if my hair starts to go at the back of my head.
It is still early days for me as I only started regaine 26th August, I have not really seen any new growth, but at least no more hair is falling out which is something….. Anyway time will tell as you say give it 3-6 months for any hair regrowth, so hopefully my hair will get even thicker 🙂

If you are not at least maintaining your existing hair after 6 months of use with Rogaine foam, it may not be working for you. But keep in mind that even healthy hair goes through cycles which includes a temporary shedding period. Healthy hairs however, will grow back. In my opinion, you may want to continue its use for a full year and document your progress with pictures. If after a full year, you’ve lost a significant amount of additional hair, it’s probably time to cease its use. In the meantime, you may want to consider adding Propecia (finasteride) to your hair loss regimen, which inhibits the amount of DHT production and thus, reduces your chances of experiencing hair loss. Both treatments combined can produce the best results.
Also, shaving your head won’t affect your treatment program.

Also I am considering using propecia so I do not lose any more hair, even though I am not balding at the top of the head (most likely I will as my dad is a baldy lol). Would this help my situation or just make it worse?

An initial “shedding phase” is almost always associated with first time minoxidil usage. The shed can last anywhere from 3-4 months (meaning 90-120 days total), so shedding between days 40 and 80 isn’t uncommon.
Additionally, keep in mind that while the FDA trials tested and found minoxidil effective in the midscalp/vertex region, many hair restoration experts agree that “hair is hair,” and there aren’t any obvious reasons why minoxidil wouldn’t work on hairs in the hairline/frontal 1/3rd of the scalp. Having said that, anecdotal evidence shows that results in the hairline and frontal 1/3 of the scalp are mixed.
Regardless, because minoxidil is a proven, effective preventive hair loss treatment, I would continue utilizing it. The shedding phase is normal and is usually followed by a cycle of thicker hair re-growth and growth of new hairs in general.

Hi David,
I have been using Regaine Foam (5%) on the front of my hair as I have seen doctors on the internet advise people that it is perfectly alright to use on the front – receding hairline, even though it isn’t approved by the FDA. Anyway I have been using it for 80 days and it has made my hair a lot thinner.
Should I keep using this product, as i fear it is causing my hair to fall out at a much faster rate. I am 22, please advise.

After 4 months of Rogaine foam use, no hair re-growth. Massive itchy, flaking of the scalp. And for the past two months, at least, a significant increase in hair loss when I had no noticeable shedding prior to that time.
On a 1 to 5 scale, I give Rogaine a minus 5 rating. Worthless and caused actual harm. I do not recommend that others try Rogaine as there are genuine risks associated with its use.

There should be no harm in a healthy male beyond the age of 49 using Rogaine Foam. The literature quotes these ages because that is what the clinical trials were based on. In other words, Rogaine is proven safe and effective for men who fall within that age range but was not tested on men older or younger. Thus, it is not “proven” safe and effective for them.
While I’m quite sure there is no problem with you using Rogaine Foam, I am not a doctor and I always recommend that anyone considering taking a new drug consult with their physician prior to doing so.

Shedding in the first two months of starting Rogaine is perfectly normal. While minoxidil is not clinically proven to regrow hair in the hairline, some patients have reported increased hair growth in that area. You may be seeing the early signs that Rogaine will increase your hair density in the front.
Dark circles under the eyes is not a documented side effect of Rogaine but you are not the first user to describe this.
Balding men and women using minoxidil for hair growth should use the drug for between 6 months and one year before assessing their results. If you experience severe side effects, discuss this with your doctor. You may wish to try the 2% solution before stopping Rogaine entirely. Remember that, should you discontinue use of minoxidil, you will lose any benefits from its use and hair loss will resume.

Hello, im start with saying that my english isnt perfect so im sorry.
Anyway im 23 years old and i think that i have some hair loss. I went to visit a dermatologist, she could’t say for sure. She sayd she thinks that i got hair loss but very slow version.
im not bald at all, and i’ve not that thinn hair at all. My hair is just litte litte thinning in the beginning of my hairline. When my hair is all just straight up pointing to the sky, i can see little bit of my scalp(just in the front area)
Anyway i dont know if im losing hair but i’ve been notice this for 2 years ago, before that i didnt even think of my hair, so i cant remember really how it look like before i start notice.
When wash my hair with shampoo and condiciner 1-3 a week, every time a massage shampoo and conditioner to my hair i have like 10-15 hairs in each hand. that is a syntom?
With all this sayd. do you think i need to use rogaine? should i do it? have i anything to lose? i want to save my hair and if possible maybe get back some where it has been little thinner. But for telling you the truth, im kinda scared of this thing because of the people that reporting rings around the eyes, and wrinkles.

i am a 52 yr old african man . i am not growing bald, but my hair is really thin in some place, but acceptably full enough in others. i have started to use regaine liquid for about a month ( in the booklet it says it okay for ages 18-65). However i am thinking if changing to the foam ,but all the literature i have seen says ( okay for ages 18-49). at my age can i change to the foam which i suspect is easier to use and propbly more effective?

I am wondering if anyone else has experienced burst blood vessels in the eye when using Regaine.
I have used Regaine a few times over past years and for some reason or another have stopped.
Over the years I have also on occasion for no particular reason suddenly had a blood vessel burst in my eye. I haven’t had the eye problem for many months but started using Regaine again about 2 weeks ago and now have a burst blood vessel in my eye. It now occurs to me that the last time it happened I was using Regaine so am now wondering if that is the connection.

If you use a lot of styling products, they may slightly inhibit Rogaine’s ability to be fully absorbed into the scalp. However, under normal circumstances, I don’t believe applying minoxidil to an unwashed scalp in the evenings will greatly impact your results.

In the past, I have heard of individuals seeing unplanned facial hair grown from minoxidil. Frankly, most hair loss sufferers seemed to report growth in the upper forehead and eyebrow region (closer to the application areas), but this could be related.

I consulted to a dermatologist and he said to me that there is nothing wrong with my hair I had done 2 biopsies to make sure what causes this thinning of my hair.. What is your method for measuring your hair loss? You have discounted hair length as a factor but the obvious variable is the observability of fallen hairs that have been clipped to a #1 or #2 vs. that of longer hair.
I doubt that hair length would have a significant impact on the medication’s ability to be absorbed.
My suggestion would be to collect hard data vs. simply relying on observation. Miniaturization mapping may help you to more effectively track your hair loss and can be done at home with a simple and affordable handheld digital microscope.

I have been using Regaine 5% liquid for the past 3 years now. I have seen very good results, with the shedding decreasing . However, I have a very weird case. Here is how it goes: I trim my head using a shaving machine to level 1 or 2. I notice that the hair loss stops completely. However, in 4-5 months time, as the hair becomes longer, my hair starts shedding again, until it reaches a climax of extreme loss at the end of the 5th month. (this is not due to hair length, as I have tested hair loss even when the hair is very short). Once I reach the 5th month, I shave my head again, and in a week’s time, the hair loss stops completely, only to start shedding again at the 5th month. I use regaine 5% through out all these phases. This is very weird. Does this mean regaine works only on very short hair? Or does this mean the scalp is not absorbing the regaine once my hair becomes longer?
Does anyone have a clue on why this is happening?

Some patients have speculated that longer hair may impede Rogaine Foam’s contact with the scalp. While this may be true to a small degree, I believe that this problem can be overcome with the proper technique.
One option may be to apply it to damp hair. In theory this may reduce the hair’s ability to absorb additional liquid and it also allows for easier parting to expose the scalp.
It’s quite normal for the human head to shed more than 100 hairs per day. If you are noticing new growth from using Rogaine then I suggest you continue applying it just as you are.
It can take up to an entire year to see the full benefits of minoxidil.

It sounds to me as if you are beginning to see the benefits of using minoxidil. Three months is the earliest one should expect to see the beginnings of new hair growth. These new hairs should initially be fine and light but should progressively become darker and thicker over time.
While I have not heard anyone complain of these new hairs falling out easily, I would not find it surprising as these new hairs are very delicate. The important thing here is that you are seeing new growth. I recommend that you continue to apply minoxidil for one year before assessing your results.

“Results at 48 weeks (study conclusion) show that visible, photographically evident improvements were seen in the frontal scalp regions of 51 percent of men using 5 percent minoxidil, 42 percent using 2 percent minoxidil, and 13 percent of placebo users. Two months after starting Rogaine places you right in the middle of the shedding phase. It is perfectly normal and may last up to four months. After this, the hairs that are shed should begin to grow back. It is recommended that patients continue to use Rogaine for between 6 months and one year before assessing their results.
While I have not heard of this shedding phase affecting hair in the permanent zone, I would not rule out the possibility. The fact that you are consulting with your dermatologist and have undergone testing should help to ease your fears.
In addition to using minoxidil, I also suggest discussing Propecia (finasteride) with your doctor. When used in combination, Rogaine and Propecia offer the best medical treatment for male pattern hair loss currently available.

Skipping a couple of applications of Rogaine from time to time should not negatively impact your son’s hair loss. However, rather than doing so, you may want to have him switch from liquid minoxidil to Rogaine Foam. Rogaine Foam does not contain propylene glycol which is the ingredient that typically causes scalp irritation and dryness.
A quality dandruff shampoo like Nizoral may also help reduce the itching.

Rogaine’s official website offers the following directions:
“With your fingers, spread the foam into your scalp and gently massage it throughout the hair loss area. Then wash your hands, and you’re done.”
Unlike liquid minoxidil, Rogaine Foam dries very quickly but you won’t have to rub it in till dry. Once you’ve applied it to your balding scalp, simply allow it to dry naturally.

I’ve heard speculation that Rogaine Foam’s superior absorption over its liquid counterpart may provide similar results with only one application per day. However, my personal opinion is that consumers should follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for best results as this is how the studies were conducted. The best practice is to apply it after showering in the morning and again before bed.
If you use the product for six months and see results, again, my recommendation would be to continue to follow the manufacturer’s recommended application. Reducing the dosage may result in increased hair loss.
It’s best to apply Rogaine to a clean, dry scalp. For best results, I recommend washing your hair at least once per day.

At 6 months, I think it’s safe to say that you’re past the initial shedding phase. However, keep in mind that it can take up to a full 12 months for Rogaine to really take effect, so you could be seeing some sort of residual changes. Additionally, it could be fluctuations from weather or growth cycles.

Hello, I am 19 and have been using rogaine for about 6 months now. I had been seeing a large reduction in hairloss and my barber (my dad) said that he thought my hair was “better than before”. However I have recently been losing just as much hair as I was prior to rogaine and the small hairs that I thought rogaine produced just arent darkening. basically ive been on rogaine (liquid) for 2 months then switced to foam (3rd month now) and my hair became thick and much better than b4 in say the 3rd month..however in the past month my hair has become really thin and i dont know if this is shedding or not but its really thin!
do u know what this is?and why this is happening seeing i use it 2 times a day for the past 5-6 months??
i hope its just temporary lol

hi, there are 3 question thats keep popping to my head while using rogaine foam.
1. is it makes a big difference using twice a day and once a day? as to me it’s inconvinience to use it twice a day as i have to bring the bottle everywhere.
2. if i already use it for several months, let’s say 6 months and happy with the result, should i still use it everyday or can i maintain it with once per two days or something?
3. and usually i wash my hair every two days. now i started using rogaine can i keep washing my hair twice a day? as my hair isnt that oily in the first place.

I’ve heard of people growing additional hair in areas near sites of minoxidil application, but personally haven’t heard of anyone growing excessive body hair all over. Before switching or giving up the medication, I would make an appointment with your personal physician and let him/her analyze the situation, run some basic examinations, and determine what’s causing the excessive hair growth. Increased body hair is one of the known side effects of Rogaine (minoxidil). Typically, this and other side effects of Rogaine will subside upon discontinuation of the drug. However, there are reports of increased body and facial hair that remained even after stopping application.
In short, there is simply no way to predict how your body will react.
Be aware that if you do discontinue minoxidil, you will likely lose any scalp hair growth within 4 months. Restarting the drug at a later date will probably not reproduce your original results.

Hey all,
I’ve been using romaine foam for a while and have had pretty good results. My hair had been thinning since adolescence and though still, thinning my hair loss has slowed to the point where it’s debatable whether I have more hair now or when I was younger. That being said, I now have a lot of body hair. None of my nearest relatives have the back and arm hair like mine. I know that discontinuing use of rogaine will mitigate my head’s success, but will discontinuing the rogaine slow/stop/shed my excess body hair?

It’s good to see new growth that earlier, but keep in mind that minoxidil (Rogaine) is usually associated with a brief, initial shedding period and it may take 3-6 months to really start seeing the intended results.
As far as “stepping up” the medication is concerned, I suggest using the recommended doses (as these are what’s proven to work) and reviewing any changes in your routine with your primary care physician.

I would stick to Regaine and not change to other makes from now on.
The other minoxidil (Growell) i used needed longer time to dry on the scalp/hair,it made styling hard and appeared greasy indeed…
Regaine is definitely working far better.
up to my 4th month with Minoxidil, i noticed stronger hair and it is true that the hair strands is now thicker and finer hairs can be noticed around the perimeters of hairline.
I regretted trying another slightly cheaper minoxidil which i am certain it dint work as brilliantly as “extra” Regaine 5%.

I have been using Rogaine foam for 5 – weeks. I have read about people who get bags under their eyes so I have been mindful and watching closely for this affect. I have experienced no side effects until the 4th week. I noticed an inching behind my ears, and around my eyes, not severe, (like a dry itch). I am experiencing puffiness in the itching area around my eyes and it does extenuate crow’s feet and other wrinkles. Like most balding men we might not shampoo are hair/head everyday and just rinse sometimes. I have a strong suspicion that I may be migrating the solution down into my face during my shower. This may be the cause of the bags under the eyes that people are reporting. As of today I have changed my routine so I rinse with my back to the shower and shampoo every morning along with an extra effort to wash my face and behind my ears with soap and add moisturizer to my face before starting my day. Today…no itching. I will keep you posted.

While it is normal to experience shedding after beginning medical hair loss treatments, noticeable shedding after only three days is quite unusual. Depending on the degree of shedding, you may notice several more hairs in your hands after shampooing or styling your hair.
This thinning hair is typically a good sign that the treatment is working for you. You should begin to see new hair growth in three to four months. It is generally recommended that patients continue using Rogaine (minoxidil) for up to one full year before assessing their results.

keeping up with 1ml twice daily is suggested.
The possibility of lowered sexual libido must be due to the stress of losing hairs at a ripe youthful age of 18,i doubt Regaine has anything to do with this.

Check the levels of the active ingredient “minoxidil” in the different products you’re using. This is what is going to make the treatment effective versus non-effective, and it’s possible that you’ve switched to a higher concentration and are, as a result, experiencing a greater level of shed. Hi, I started rogaine foam about ten days ago, and in the past few days my lips swelled up a bit, and I completely lost my libido ( I know they say rogaine doesn’t do this, but I’m 18 and sure there could be no other cause for this). I realized I’ve been applying too much ( probably more like a capful or a capful and a half ). So I’m wondering if I should stop altogether or just start using the correct amount?

i tried Growell (singapore brand)5% on my 3rd month into minoxidil.
as it cost S$25 lesser compared to Regaine,no harm trying.
I switched back to Regain after approx.10days on Growell.
Growell is way too oily and took longer to dry on my hair.
Being skeptical as is,i stopped totally and switched back to Regaine.
Growell also seemed to make my hair lifeless and ‘weak’.
my gut feelin told me to go back to Regaine.
I experienced more hairfall during wash this time back to Regaine.
Anyone encountered similar situation?I am afraid Growell isnt a full strength compared to Regaine hence my hair is now experiencing shedding again like it did on my first 3rd week with minoxidil.

There is no documented evidence to show that Rogaine (minoxidil)causes sexual side effects of any kind. Thus, it should have no impact on your fertility.
While finasteride, the active ingredient in Finax, is known to cause sexual side effects such as erectile dysfunction and loss of libido in less than 2% of men, many men do report conceiving children while taking the drug.
I recommend consulting with your family physician if you are having difficulty conceiving a child.

I have traction alopecia. It appears that I may have ruined the follicles on both sides of my temples (just the size of a finger tip) but my derm said that she saw some hairs and recommended I use Rogaine to kick start the growth. The expected results for me are happening much quicker than I expected and I am very optimistic. For instance my hair fell out in a matter of days and by week 2 i could feel prickly stubble and now I can actually see darker hair. I am totally impatient but considering that I am still on my 1 month supply bottle, I am extremely excited about the potential. Overall, I think the product works differently based on the individual. I have applied faithfully day and night and I also do a massage in the area after the rogaine has dried with Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

hi Andy,personally hadnt experienced such ‘ageing smokers’ symptom as well.
no noticeable larger pores on the forehead brow region when regaine tend to flow down during application which i am certain it occurs to many users.
I am happily using Regaine til date (2.5months ) and it worries me at times when i do outdoor campings and wasnt appropriate to apply the Regaine.
but i stick back to the timely routine upon convenience.
Regaine had somehow managed to thicken hair and maintained the hair fallout rate.
be tryin out Growell or Minoxi5 this 3rd month onwards..SLightly lesser costs than Regaine.

I have not personally heard anyone attribute dark circles or enlarged pores to the use of Rogaine. Certainly neither of these is listed among the possible side effects of the drug but, as is often the case with any drug, people’s reactions vary.
Perhaps reducing the frequency of the application to once per day may help. You could also try the 2% formula.

17 days into using regaine extra strength 5%. I have noticed today slight blackening around my eyes, and on closer inspection some slight enlargement of the pores between my eyebrows and on lower forehead, very worrying, searched for a possible link to regaine on google and it appears this is indeed the case 🙁
I’m sure I haven’t been using it excessively, I reckon I woud confortable reach a month with this first container possibly more. But I must now stop, I cannot risk the “heavy smokers look”.
Have you had these side effects reported to you at all? Surely this should be more clearly noted on the container!

Hi, been using rogain foam 5% extra strength for 2 weeks now, and have noticed hair loss at a faster rate than before the treatment, I bought a 3 month supply so I certainly won’t be giving in, but it is very demoralising. If I don’t see any positive effects by the end of the 3 months it will be difficult to buy more. Today I bought some Alpecin shampoo to replace the “Head and Shoulders”, and will be using that each day also from now on. As the bald patch on my crown has become far more noticeable recently, and mainly in the last two weeks it seems, then I have also bought a 2 week supply of Toppik to see what effects that has. The dream of course is that together the shampoo and regain halt the hair loss, and then the regain can work to bring back the hair and reduce any need for Toppik.
I enjoyed reading the responses from the experts on this site, and it was reassuring to see that hair loss does occur in a “shedding phase”, although being the cynical man I am, I then decided these comments held less weight once you were posting links to your own online shop for people to buy the product.
I suppose it’s a matter of fingers crossed, I’ll at least be sticking to it for the 3 months, and will post back here my feelings for people to read.
Thanks for providing this Q&A, I realise this is neither a Q or an A but just wanted to get my experiences so far on here for others to read who are considering the treatment

How closely shaved? Personally, I haven’t heard of any restrictions with Rogaine foam due to hair length, and my guess is that if your hair was cropped short or “shaved” you’d still be eligible to use the product. Good luck!

Have no fear! Using Rogaine (minoxidil)on healthy, non-miniaturized hair will not cause that hair to become dependent on it. There is no need to continue using the product. Your shed hairs should regrow in 4 to 6 months.

Hi, I’m not balding and have no balding in my family, but u stupidly applied the foam on my hairline to see if I could alter/make it thicker. After 2 weeks Of course some hair sheds and now I look like I am balding haha. I’ve stopped using it, and don’t plan on ever again. Will my hair regrow if I continue to not use it or do I have to complete the cycle?

began noticing hair thinning mid 2010 and started to seek chinese trichologists help.Beijing 101 is next to crap they’re about selling snake oils.

While Rogaine (minoxidil) may work to increase facial hair, it may also cause blemishes as well as skin irritation.

If you’ve seen some thinning but are not extensively bald then this is a great time to start Rogaine (minoxidil). The shedding is normal and you should see hair regrowth at between 4 and 6 months.
I personally use both generic Kirkland minoxidil and Rogaine Foam. I started using minoxidil at the same time I began using generic finasteride. While I have seen lots of improvement in my crown, I cannot say what percent of hair growth is from minoxidil and what percent is from finasteride.

My hair has thickened loads. I now dont look like I was going bald at all. You cant stop loosing or thinning at the front no matter what you do really though. I used nisim shampoo,rogaine liquid, propecia and I use a lazer comb three or four times a week.
I bet the liquid works better personally from what ive read as the foam will evaporate. Only thing im worried about is the effects of propecia in the long run. Ive been on all of the above for around a year now im 26 but worried the use of propecia can make you less fertile as ive read.

I just started 3weeks on the regaine regime and am shedding as expected.
long,short ,fine, thick.
i intend to stick to it for the next six months to see if any progress.
i am using it not due to severe hair loss,but only to maintain & upkeep what i have as of now, as i do not wish to have little hair by the time i hit 40.
Pls advise if this is wise to do so as i am worried the shedding hair might not grow back and that would be a great discourse.perhaps i shouldnt even started this regime at all?

Although it’s different from androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness), diffuse patterned or unpatterned baldness is still likely caused by your genetics and it’s something you should definitely look into.
I think a good first step would be scheduling a consultation with a dermatologist to examine your scalp and make sure that the baldness is being caused by genetics and not an outside cause. If this is the case, then adding Rogaine (minoxidil) could be a wise choice and definitely add some of the desired “thickness” to your hair.
Keep in mind that Propecia (finasteride) may be helpful as well, and the sooner you schedule a dermatology appointment and begin these proven preventive medications (finasteride/minoxidil), the sooner you can begin stabilizing and potentially reversing your hair loss. Good luck!

I don’t have androgenic alopecia, what I have is diffusive alopecia, because I have a lot of hair but there several areas that are thin (front middle and upper sides) and no one from my family is bald. I began to add to my regular diet: green vegetables, vitamins, biotin, etc. My question is if I begin to use Rogaine along with a healthy diet so the thin hair can get thicker and healthier and I manage to get the results, if I stop to use Rogaine will my hair get thin again because I stopped to use it (Rogaine)?

You should use Rogaine (minoxidil) for a minimum of 4 to 6 months before evaluating your results. It is recommended that Rogaine be applied twice daily and your success may depend on proper application and dosage. If you do not see any results after 6 months, I recommend speaking to your doctor.

There should be no problem in switching between Rogaine Foam and liquid. However, I suggest using a quality dandruff shampoo like Nizoral to treat the flaking.
Nizoral may also provide an added benefit in treating your hair loss as it contains ketoconazole which has been shown to act as a mild DHT blocker.

I’ve been using the liquid Rogaine for years and it definetly works. My problem is all the white flakes. I’m wondering if alternating the foam one month and the regular liquid every other month will affect it’s effectiveness? I want to reduce the flakes while not increasing the cost too much.

It is best to apply Rogaine (minoxidil) to a clean, dry scalp. If you wash hair in the morning and do not apply styling products then simply rinsing with water in the evening should be sufficient. However, if you use hair spray, gel or other products then you should thoroughly shampoo your hair prior to applying Rogaine. This will ensure that the minoxidil can fully absorb into your scalp.

Shedding is typically a sign that the Rogaine (minoxidil) is working for you. Theoretically, you should be shedding primarily miniaturized hairs that should grow back thicker and stronger.
In my opinion (based on my own experience and that of many forum members), the estimated two weeks that the Rogaine directions recommend is not nearly enough time for the shedding to cease. It is generally suggested that patients use Rogaine for no less than 4 months before assessing its effects.
That said, I do recommend discussing your hair loss with a physician to rule out causes other than androgenic alopecia (male pattern balding). You may also want to discuss Propecia (finasteride) with your doctor.

At this point in time, you have not used the Rogaine long enough to see any real results. Normally, it takes around 4 months to start seeing signs of new, Rogaine assisted growth. You should definitely stay on the product and give it more time to work. I hope this helps!

Some patients do report success using minoxidil on the hairline. As you say, you’ve got nothing to lose by trying. Be sure to use the medication twice daily for at least six months before assessing your results.
I also recommend consulting with a dermatologist about Propecia (finasteride). Using these medications in combination is the best treatment currently available for male pattern balding.

I’m based in the United States, so I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not well informed when it comes to rules regarding medications in Saudi Arabia. However, I’ve done some research and come to a few conclusions: 1. I can’t specifically find anything stating Rogaine and or Propecia isn’t allowed in Saudi Arabia. 2. Since Rogaine is not a prescription medication, I assume you wouldn’t have too much of an issue ordering it online. 3. Propecia, however, is a prescription medication, and while it’s readily available online, I’m not sure how this would be viewed by the postal service (or body that oversees this) in Saudi Arabia.

Hi!
I have been using rogaine for the past 4 months. hairloss seems to be stopped however, new hair is yet to be seen.
However, i have this one huge problem that has been freaking me out. If i look very closely in the mirror, i can see small light hair on my forehead especially between the eyebrows and the hairline????i am really freaked now, cause i have been using rogaine and it seems to be working but then this side effect is killing me. Please advice what I should do?? would these hair on forehead become darker????

I have no information regarding the availability of Rogaine Foam in Nigeria. It is available at many online stores including here at our own. However, I imagine that shipping charges from the USA to Nigeria would be quite cost prohibitive.

Men’s Rogaine is perfectly safe for use by women. In fact, many hair loss physicians recommend the 5% solution for their female patients.
Minoxidil has been used in the past to lower blood pressure. However, it is highly unlikely that applying Rogaine to the scalp will have a significant impact on blood pressure.
The higher dose may result in a greater risk of known side effects including scalp irritation and an increase in facial hair growth.

Been using Proscar for around 14yrs. Have receding hair line and thinning on crown about size of orange. Proscar kept it somewhat from loosing more but tried rogaine foam 2weeks ago and have defently hair increase on receding hair line which they state doesn’t help on, crown is somewhat improved but this is only 2 weeks and i’m 56. My guess is the proscar needed a catalyst to kick of what it couldn’t do on its own, like fertilizer needs lots of water. I use rogaine all over on top my head maybe 1 1/2 cap full size. Proscar is 5mg. I don’t notice any side effects, probably because of my age.

Some hair loss sufferers report increased scalp acne while using Rogaine foam. From what I can gather, the individual pimples can last up to 7 days and will probably become less frequent the further you get into your Rogaine regimen. There is also a possibility that you’ve began shedding hair from the medication and are now noticing blemishes on your scalp. These sheds usually last up to 4 months and are temporary.

My Md prescribed womens rogaine for me because i took a depo provera shot and it caused hair loss. I have a few questions. I just did my first rogane tx today, and i worry that if when the shot wears off and my hormones return to normal the rogaine will prevent me from growing my hair naturally. Can that happen? Most hair loss patients agree that there is a 2-4 month shedding period associated with beginning minoxidil use. If you switched from the liquid to foam, it’s conceivable that you’re undergoing a new shedding period. However, because the active ingredient is still the same (minoxidil), it seems a bit unique. However, I’ve personally read accounts of Rogaine users reporting additionally shedding when switching from the liquid to the foam, so you should probably stick with the foam for a few months (probably up to 4) and see what happens.

Yes, once you stop utilizing preventive hair loss medications like Propecia and Rogaine you will lose the regrown hair.
Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil) are two different medications that prevent hair loss in two different ways. Propecia (finasteride) blocks the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in our bodies. DHT is the hormone that is directly responsible for hair loss. The mechanism behind Rogaine (minoxidil)is still a bit of a mystery, but most experts believe that it helps open blood vessels and increase the flow of oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles.

While these bumps may simply be an indication of hair growing below the scalp, I suggest you consult a dermatologist just be to sure.

I have heard a few stories of red bumps on the scalp immediately after starting Rogaine. However, finding stubble after only two weeks is unusual. It normally takes several weeks before any new hair growth is seen from using minoxidil.
While these bumps may be a temporary result of your new hair growth, I recommend consulting a dermatologist to be sure.

I was using Rogaine liquid for about four months with really encouraging results. Hair was growing back, and I completely stopped losing any existing hair.
About a month ago, I switched to Rogaine foam. I am now losing a significant amount of new hair. I can see the little inch-long hairs on my fingers after I apply foam or wash my hair, and this never used to happen.
Could this be part of a normal shedding cycle, where the first of the new hairs are at the end of their lifecycle?
I have checked to make sure that the foam is within the expiration date.
Has anyone else had this experience of new hair loss after several months of use, or after switching to foam?

A good percentage of minoxidil users (especially those who start using it at a time when the hairs are really miniaturizing) experience what is called a shedding period. Essentially, for the first 3-4 months, the minoxidil causes the miniaturized hairs to fall out (as all hairs do in a normal cycle) and then grow back thicker and stronger. As I said before, most people experience this phase for the first 3-4 months, and then the hair grows back thicker and stronger. If this is still causing anxiety, you could also always consult with a dermatologist or one of our recommended hair restoration physicians to ensure that it is the minoxidil that is causing the shed (though it’s very like that it is). So, the hair should come back in an improved state, and stopping the medication now is usually not recommended because you’ll lose any unseen and future benefits. Good luck, and hang in there!

According to my research, Wella tonic is essentially a formula that helps increase blood flow to the scalp. Although experts are not certain how minoxidil (Rogaine) functions, one of the big assumptions is that it dilates blood vessels and increases nutrient and oxygen flow to the scalp. In my opinion, Wella shouldn’t necessarily conflict with minoxidil on a biochemical level.
However, I would be curious as to the application process, and if applying Wella to the scalp before or after applying Rogaine may interfere with minoxidil entering the scalp. In my opinion, since minoxidil is a proven method, I don’t know if it’s worth the risk of negating its effects by applying another tonic to the scalp. Especially one that isn’t as trusted as Minoxidil and could work in a similar way.
You may want to look into other medications, such as finasteride (Propecia), that are proven and work in conjunction with minoxidil. I hope this helps!

As far as using minoxidil with a new baby – I don’t really see this being an issue. However, most sources recommend keeping the product itself out of the reach of children. In my opinion, you should be fine using the product as long as the baby isn’t brought into direct contact with the foam or liquid. If it was your wife who was utilizing minoxidil, it may be a different issue. I hope this helps. Since both Rogaine liquid and foam contain the same active ingredient minoxidil, I see no reason why using the liquid at night and the foam in the morning would be a problem.
Regarding continued thinning, using Rogaine doesn’t guarantee that the progressive nature of hair loss will stop. However, it can help slow it down or even save some of your natural hair from it’s genetic fate. If you are male, you may also want to consider using Propecia (finasteride) which will increase your chances of stopping the progressive nature of pattern baldness.

Using Rogaine foam after terrible reaction to the propylene glycol in standard rogaine. Used for 4 months then stopped for a while. When i used it next i had a terrible inflamed head. Dermatitis was so bad. Just getting over it after 1 month of Nizarol and grapeseed oil / epiderm application. Now it is calm ive just applied rogaine foam and no irritation so far. The usual rogaine hurt immediately.
I wouldnt use 5% traditional rogaine if it irritates. Hope the foam is as effective.

It’s better to apply Rogaine to dry or slightly damp hair. Thus, if you are going to apply Rogaine immediately after a shower, make sure you towel dry your hair prior to applying it to the balding areas of your scalp.

Thanks for your message. Since trichotillomania is a self inflicted hair loss condition due to hair pulling, I recommend consulting a counselor to help you stop your hair pulling behavior. Since your hair loss condition is directly related to your own actions, as long as the follicles aren’t severely damaged, ceasing the hair pulling behavior may reverse the loss and your hair may regrow on its own. Rogaine (minoxidil) may also help stimulate hair regrowth. However, it may take a good 6 to 12 months for hair regrowth to occur. Unless you are also experiencing genetic hair loss, your hair shouldn’t develop a dependency on minoxidil and stopping its use shouldn’t cause additional hair loss.

I, too, have experienced the dark rings and bags around my eyes after 2-3 months of usage and now I’m seeing pore enlargement under my eyes after 4 months of usage. I wanted it to work, but I’ll end up looking worse from these side effects if I stay on it.
If you want to try it, keep an eye out for these side effects. From what I’ve read, they remain for a few years after ceasing treatment.

Yes, you can use other styling products with Rogaine. It’s just a good idea to let the Rogaine foam dry prior to applying anything else to your scalp. You can facilitate drying by using a blow dryer on a low, cool setting. It’s a good idea never to use heat since it’s bad for your hair.

Losing hair at an early age can be hard. However, it’s only the insecure people of this world who feel compelled to mock others for their imperfections.
Propecia and Rogaine are the two most effective non-surgical solutions for hair loss. If you’ve only just started to lose your hair, you may want to consider talking to a physician about these sooner than later. It’s a lot easier to maintain and strengthen existing thinning hair than to grow it back once its gone.

I know of several people who use Rogaine once daily with great success. That said, for best results, Rogaine recommends using their product twice daily, even for maintenance. You could always ease into the product by starting once daily to see if it has a positive effect. If it doesn’t, you can always increase the dosage.

Just do a Google search and you will find many others complaining of this affect and other problems like wrinkles under the eyes and pore enlargement. I suffered all these affects and even after stopping this four years ago some of them remain.

It takes up to 4 to 6 months to see the positive effects of Rogaine. If you’ve just switched back to the 5% minoxidil solution, the follicles may still be getting re-adjusted with another initial hair shedding phase. This is typical upon starting minoxidil hair loss treatment. Though I can’t guarantee Rogaine will work for you, it’s probably best to give it another full 4 to 6 months to see if its as effective as it was before.

Currently, Rogaine foam only comes in a 5% minoxidil solution which isn’t recommended to women. This is due to the increased possibility of unwanted facial and body hair growth. However, some women do use the 5% solution with even greater success than the 2% solution without the unwanted side effects. If the Rogaine for women 2% minoxidil formula isn’t aiding much benefit for you, you may want to speak to your dermatologist about potentially switching to the 5% minoxidil Rogaine foam solution.

I live in Canada and buy my Rogaine foam in packs from Costco when I go to the States. It costs the same as a double pack of regular Rogaine in Canada.
There is no doubt that Rogain foam works much better. The main thing for me is the Lack of Propylene Glycol, one of the main ingredients in Rogaine liquid. I am allergic to this substance, and it causes severe rashes and hair loss. For me it got to the point where I had to stop using Rogaine liquid, because it was causing more hair loss than it was preventing.
When I started to use the foam after having stopped using the liquid, I lost a LOT of hair, but it grew back in full force.
Other benefits: it doesn’t drip down your head, it works great on the forehead, and you can put on a hat a few minutes after it dries. TOTALLY WORTH THE MONEY.

Have you considered ordering Rogaine online? Otherwise, I suspect (though since I’m not from Canada I can’t guarantee) that Rogaine would be available at your local drug store.

It’s recommended to use Rogaine for at least 4 months before making an official evaluation of successful hair loss treatment. However, considering it takes time for hair follicles to produce new and/or thicker hair, it may be worth extending its use to 6 months before throwing down the gavel.

Rogaine can only market successful hair regrowth in the crown because the FDA only approved it for that purpose based on the efficacy tests provided. However, many hair loss sufferers have used Rogaine to strengthen miniaturizing hair in the hairline and on the top of the scalp. In my opinion, if you have thinning hair in areas other than the balding vertex, it may be worth applying Rogaine to those balding areas also.

I’m thinning on the top as well as the front. They say it does not work in those area’s. Is it worth trying. Could it hurt? Thanks.

You can stop using it anytime however, stopping Rogaine will most likely result in a loss of all benefit including any hair regrowth. Stauled or stopped hair loss will also most likely continue.

Rogaine foam smells like synthetic, CFC-laden hairspray from the 1980’s. In other words, disgusting. Additionally, it still leaves a coating on your hair that makes it look lifeless.

I stopped using rogain liquied form for a few months, after using it for about 6 years. I noticed my hair drastically falling out. I started using rogaine foam for about a month and a half, but still haven’t noticed it taking affect yet. Does this mean it’s not working for me or do I need to give it more time. Can liquid form be stronger than the foam?

Is Rogaine Foam also available in Canada? I currently use the generic form of Propecia, but am thinking of adding Rogaine to try and grow some hair back too. However, I’m not keen on the regular serum due to the above mentioned greasy-ness, and would thus prefer the foam. Anyone know if I can get it in Canada?

I have been using the foam for about three months now. It is SO much easier to apply that I am actually using it the right way, (which I never did with the lotion for the reasons mentioned above) and I am seeing GREAT results. I also use Toppik to fill in the dead spots, and I am using less and less of it as my hair is becoming much thicker and fuller.
Michael, yes, you can wear a hat, just give it about 10 minutes to dry.

I’ve been using rogaine for a few years now and i guess it’s kind of working, but my problem is that it creates major scalp irriation and flaking, which i think really hurts my hair b/c the skin that holds the hair in flakes off. I’m about to start on the foam today and i will post my results in a month or two. I’m kind of worried though that it won’t absorb into the skin as much as the other, and then the hair that I do have will fall out b/c i don’t have the monoxidil getting to it like before.

I’ve been doing some readings on hair regrowth products. Is Rogaine safer than Propecia? and why does some people use both product? is it necessary? I’m thinking hair transplant as well but I’m afraid that if I decide to go bald, there may be scars on the top of my head.

Patrick, Rogaine foam is now available at any drug store in the USA, including Maine. No prescription is needed.
