Hair Loss after Temporarily Stopping Rogaine (Minoxidil): Will Hair Regrow?
Hi, I’ve been using minoxidil for approximately two years and was quite happy with the results until I went two weeks without using it. After that I noticed a lot of hair loss! I’m still continuing to use it but now wondering if I’ve completely wasted my time and money for the past two years as I’ve heard you don’t regrow hair when you’ve had a break in the routine. Is that true?
I would not say that you’ve completely wasted your time. However, it is likely that some of the hair that shed will not regrow. Even so, I would venture to guess that restarting Rogaine (minoxidil) has continued to preserve hairs that would have been lost otherwise. It’s always the best option to continue use.
Unfortunately, there is really no way to know for sure. Only time will tell how much hair growth will return.

Lucy,
It is important to note that dry and brittle hair is also associated with thyroid issues. Are you certain that Rogaine is the cause?
I do not believe that Rogaine is capable of causing permanent damage or hair loss. When hair is damaged to the point of breakage from the application of chemicals, there is no reason why it should not regrow once the application is stopped unless the scalp itself has been damaged.
If it’s liquid minoxidil that is causing problems, you may want to try Rogaine Foam. It does not contain the same harsh chemicals as the liquid.

Hi. I used rogaine for many years with very good results. I stopped using it for almost two years because my hair became brittle dry and was braking off But for those two years my hair never fell out at all. Last year mu thyroid levels became too high and I started shedding sons hair. Dermatologist suggested t try rogaine I got scared about the shedding and tried it for two days I stopped after that. Hair got so dry again brittle broke off in front and sides. Question will my hair grow back in these areas. Or has rogaine permanently famed my front hsir line I am worried because my hsir is still very shirt in front and sides. With not much growth. I k ow that my thyroid medication is not working properly yet. But had rogsone caused permanent damage. Thanks
