Can Nizoral Shampoo Treat Male Pattern Hair Loss?
Nizoral is a dandruff shampoo containing the active ingredient ketoconazole. It can be purchased over-the-counter in a 1% formulation. A 2% prescription strength is also available. Topical use of 2% ketoconazole solution has been reported to have a positive effect on androgenic alopecia (genetic hair loss). However, its ability to regrow hair has not yet been scientifically proven.
Though Nizoral may offer some benefit to those with thinning hair, it seems to work best when used in combination with the clinically proven and FDA approved hair loss treatments Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil). Used together, these products are known as “The Big Three”.
Nizoral should not be used every day. Over use may result in itching, scalp irritation or other side effects. For the treatment of genetic balding, it is recommend to shampoo with Nizoral no more than 3 times per week. Some users report hair shedding when starting any medical treatment.
