    Rosalie,

At your age, you’re far too young for any sort of hair restoration procedure. Frankly, you still have plenty of time for your facial shape and hairline to change, and you need to wait before investigating surgery.

    I hope this helps!

I’m 13 with a VERY high hairline. I’m absoulutley desperate to lower it. I’ve tried bangs and nothing works for me. Is there any way at my age I can get this done? And would it make me have hair loss? Also who would you recommend in West Virginia?

    -Thanks.

    John,

Because of your age, it’s essentially impossible to tell how hair loss could affect your native hair at this point. Additionally, it’s likely that for a male patient, lowering a hairline via hair transplant surgery is a better option.

Feel free to review our recommended hair transplant surgeons (http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/hair-loss-doctors.asp) for more information.

    I hope this helps!

    Hello,

I am 18 male and have read about the forehead reduction and hair transplant procedures. I wud like to lower my hairline and will not mind either procedure. The males in my family have good history with very little cases of balding. I would like to know if you know of any good places to get this procedure done in Australia, and if not, which overseas places u recommend? Also would it be okay to shave my head after teh procedure is done and i have recovered?

    Hippy Chick,

While I’m uncertain whether or not there are any surgeons performing the hairline lowering procedure in Canada, we do recommend excellent hair transplant surgeons in various regions of Canada who may be able to recommend someone or effectively lower your hairline through follicular unit transplantation: http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/hair-loss-doctors-NorthUS.asp

Additionally, you may want to consider contacting Dr. Kabaker regarding a recommendation, consultation, or information about general pricing: http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/doctors.asp?DrID=138#page=page-1

    Good luck!

I’m 24 and always had issues with my big forehead. Would there be a posibility to get it done either in Ottawa, Canada or Montreal, Canada? If yes, at what cost?

    Josephine,

Since this type of procedure would be more of a plastic/reconstruction case, I’m not sure where to refer you (unless you were interested in another hair transplant procedure, which may help: http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/hair-loss-doctors.asp).

You may want to consider obtaining a plastic surgery referral from your primary physician. Good luck!

    Hi Jo,

Essentially, there are two ways to effectively lower a hairline or mask a ‘high forehead:’

    1. To undergo a hairline lowering procedure like the one described in the above post called a forehead reduction.

    2. Is to undergo a hair transplant procedure where the hairline is lowered to a more aesthetically pleasing level by removing hair grafts from the back of your scalp and implanting them in front of your scalp to lower the hairline region.

Dr. Sheldon Kabaker (http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/doctors.asp?DrID=138#page=page-1) in California is the surgeon I would recommend if you’re interested in forehead reduction, but, because he’s further away, if you’re interested in hair transplantation, we recommend quite a few excellent surgeons in Canada:

Hello, I am a 22 year old female and have been depressed about my high forehead since I can remember. It literally holds me back from a lot of things in my life. I live in Newfoundland, Canada and I don’t believe there is anyone here who performs this procedure. I am wondering if you could tell me about anywhere else in Canada that might (close to Newfoundland/east preferably). Thank you.

    Jax,

I suggest contacting Dr. Kabaker in California for his recommendation. He is an expert in the procedure and may know of a skilled surgeon practicing forehead reduction in the UK.

Additionally, Dr. Farjo of the Farjo Clinic in London and Manchester may also be able to direct you to a quality surgeon in the UK.

Remember, when considering this or any other surgery, having the procedure done correctly far outweighs the cost and inconvenience of air travel.

    Good luck!

    Ernie,

For a male your age, it is not advisable to pursue surgical hair restoration of any kind. There are many factors to consider, including taking into consideration any future hair loss you may experience.

If you were born with a naturally high hairline and have no family history of male pattern balding then you may be a candidate for the hairline lowering procedure. However, for most men, hair transplant surgery is the best option.

If you are experiencing hair loss, I recommend consulting with a dermatologist. You may benefit from using Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride). The earlier you start this regimen, the better the results you can expect. Later, when you are older and your hair loss pattern has defined itself, you may be a candidate for surgery.

    Maria,

Why don’t you take a look at our list of recommended hair restoration physicians: http://www.hairtransplantnetwork.com/Consult-a-Physician/hair-loss-doctors.asp . We recommend an impressive group of doctors on the East coast, and each should be able to analyze your situation and recommend an appropriate ‘next step.’

As far as cost is concerned, this is going to depend on the type of procedure (an actual forehead reduction/hairline lowering or hair transplantation – most likely the most efficient option) and, more importantly, the policies of the clinic you choose. Good luck!

    Angie,

While the hair transplant network and/or hair loss Q & A blog do not offer any sort of loan program or set hair transplantation costs, we do recommend some excellent hair restoration surgeons in New York. These specific physicians and clinics would be able to give you more information regarding hairline lowering, how much the procedure would cost, and what type of payment plans they have available. I hope this helps!

There are very few doctors that I am aware of that perform this procedure. To my knowledge, none of our recommended hair restoration physicians in Europe offer the hairline lowering procedure. However, they may be able to recommend someone. I suggest contacting one of the quality hair restoration clinics in Europe listed here and requesting information.

So I was wondering, do you know any surgeons in Denmark or Europe who can do this as good as Dr. Shelly Kabaker?

It’s probably my biggest wish to get this surgery done, just the thought of being able to comb my hair back in a ponytail and feel a whole lot less abnormal to look at is wonderful.

    Tiffany,

It is not likely that a physician will perform this type of procedure on someone under the age of 18. However, if you are concerned about it, I suggest that you discuss your concerns with a parent or legal guardian. If they are willing to allow you to pursue surgery, it wouldn’t hurt to discuss your options with Dr. Kabaker.

    Hi Mohamed,

Although the hairline lowering or forehead reduction procedure can be carried out on a male the same way it can on a female, it’s usually not recommended. The reason why is because a significant percentage of men (somewhere around 50%) experience hair loss at some point in their life. If you were to go bald, the look achieved with the hairline lowering procedure would become unnatural, and a scar would likely be visible in the front of your head. Since you said you could go bald in your mid-thirties, this could be a problem.

Technically, you could use hair transplantation to lower your hairline, but you begin to face the same problems with future balding. Although the transplanted hair would remain at the lower position in your scalp, the rest of your hair would thin or recede and leave an unnatural gap between your lowered hairline and the rest of your hair.

Furthermore, at your age, it’s nearly impossible to accurately predict your future hair loss, and hairline lowering in general would not be recommended. The risks and future implications are just high. There are certain instances where individuals completely keep their native hair or stick to a medication regimen and are able to slightly lower the hairline, but your case just presents quite a few future “unknowns.”

Hello. I am a 18 year old (male) with a very big forehead. I was just wondering if I would met the age requirement. I know there are some risks involved. I don’t particularly mind going bold around 35ish (I heard it’s around those times I may start to lose hair generally). I was also wondering what are the risks? Does this surgery/procedure mean high chance of baldness at 20 or later in life? Any average age that a person starts balding?

PS, is this surgery/procedure offered in the UK or would I have to travel?

    Zara,

In my opinion, forehead reduction surgery is a viable solution for many women with naturally large foreheads and higher hairlines. Recommended hair transplant surgeon Dr. Kabaker is one of the world’s leading experts in performing this procedure with minimal risks and high rates of success.

The best part about this procedure is that women can achieve the desired result in a fraction of the time as hairline reconstruction via hair transplant surgery. The major disadvantage of this procedure however, is that it’s highly invasive and requires more time to properly heal.

In men, the procedure is a lot riskier, especially since unlike hair hairline reconstruction via hair transplantation, no DHT safe hair has been moved to the hairline with forehead reduction surgery. Thus, in the event a patient later experiences male pattern baldness, hairline recession could destroy the cosmetic result of the forehead reduction procedure.

Another alternative is state of the art hair transplant surgery. However, it may take several procedures and will take much longer to achieve the results you want. It’s also much more expensive.

That said, I imagine that no physician will perform this kind of procedure on you until you are at least 18 years of age. But since it concerns you, I suggest speaking with your parent(s) and/or legal guardian(s) about your concerns and if they are willing, you can all consult with Dr. Kabaker together.

Hello, is there any precudure for foreheads to be smaller. I’m 15 years old and hate everything about how I look, I want my forehead to be smaller and how old do you have to be for surgery?

  45. Sheldon S. Kabaker M.D.
    November 15, 2009 @ 9:07 pm

The hairline lowering operation is not a hair transplant. It is a type of scalp reduction, as has been pointed out, that has stood the test of time. It is best performed on females who have no ongoing hair loss. Some males who have had transplants or will commit themselves to having them later might be considered only after extensive counseling. In general I discourage men from having this operation. If they are having male pattern loss follicular unit grafting should be considered first. Also women with female or male pattern loss should be similarly discouraged.

It is fabulous procedure for those women who are self conscious of a high ,masculine hairline, who have always had this condition , who have a familial tenecy for this and have adequate laxity of the forehead and scalp. The procedure does not preclude someone from having follicular unit grafting at a later date.
