How Effective are Hair Transplants in Scar Tissue?
This question, asked by a member of our Hair Loss Social Community and Discussion Forums, was answered by Coalition hair transplant surgeon Dr. Glenn Charles:
I would like to know if anyone has had a experience with hair transplants into scar tissue. I consulted with a hair restoration physician that told me that he can’t do the hair transplant. He was very frank and told me that my scar tissue is too thin and that there is not enough thickness for the follicles. I was, of course, disappointed that it can’t be done but I really appreciated his sincerity.
I have transplanted follicular unit grafts into scars on many patients. Some with very impressive success and some with very little success. It really depends on what type of scar we are dealing with (keloid vs hypertrophic), the depth, and the location.
Unfortunately, it may be true that hair growth in your scar will be poor. However, you may want to consider getting a second opinion. It never hurts and if several doctors come to the same conclusion you may feel more confident with your options.

My experience is different from the advice given by the original doctor, that is, grafts tend to grow well in thin scars and not so well in thick scars.
Less circulation means less vasoconstrictor and less density to me but even that opinion is not universal.
Bottom line is “just do it!”
