I have a prescription for a full 5mg tablet of finasteride but it requires me to split the pills in 4’s and take 1 a day. Is there any negative side effects where I can take half every 2 days? It seems like a lot of trouble to do this all the time. If not maybe I can get a 1mg pill somewhere.

Generic 1mg finasteride has been available in the US for the treatment of hair loss since 2013. Last time I checked, it was still quite expensive as compared to splitting a 5mg pill, but you may want to call around and see what the best price is. It’s amazing how prices vary from pharmacy to pharmacy and it is still significantly cheaper than purchasing Propecia.

I prefer to purchase 5mg tablets and quarter them. It takes no time at all with a pill cutter. I keep a 7 day pill organizer and load it up at the start of the week.

In terms of side effects, as with any drug, the greater the dose the greater the risk. There’s no way to predict what your personal experience might be in moving from 1.25mg to 2.5mg. If you tolerate it well you may not notice any difference at all. Personally, I’m not a fan of taking more of any drug than is medically necessary.
