Is it true that dandruff can cause hair loss?
There is speculation by hair restoration physicians that scalp inflamation can aggravate and inhibit healthy hair growth and thus contribute to hair loss and thinning. Some physicians recommend using Nizoral shampoo two or three times a week to minimize any scalp inflamation. Of course, male pattern baldness is primarily determined by genetics. That is why for most balding men we loose hair on top and still keep our hair on the sides regardless of having dandruff, scalp inflamation or what ever shampoo we use. But reducing scalp inflamation may help reduce the severity of our hair loss or thinning.

Hi i'm 15. I've got dandruff (not much) and ive been treating it sometimes with some dandruff product w/c my brother's using rn (dandruff's probably genetic x) I have a small bald spot and my mom told me it got wider, as noticed recently. I don't know if its because i keep on plucking it or what
keerthi,
Unfortunately, there is no definite answer to your questions. Minoxidil may help to restore your hair.
When used to treat androgenic alopecia, minoxidil must be used forever in order to maintain the results. However, in cases where it is used to regrow non-genetic forms of hair loss, patients may be able to discontinue it once their hair has returned.
The only way to know for sure just how effective minoxidil will be for you is to try it out as directed for up to one full year. If you see some hair growth and are not experiencing side effects, you may wish to continue use. If you stop, you may or may not experience shedding again.
I wish I could give you a more specific response but it really is a matter of trial and error when it comes to medical hair loss treatments.
Best of luck!

HI. I'm 20 yrs old, male . I had problems with my hair since I was 15 years old, my hair had been falling off since then. I always had a long hair and it was thick until I was 12, but now I always try to have semi-bald cut to hide the thinning areas. a few months I've noticed my hair thinned a lot faster especially in the frontal area(My problem before was only thinning at the back part) I dunno it was due to my dandruff, me wearing cap fews months ago straight(but lately I stopped wearing caps) or my haircut(i tried to trim it monthly or once in 2 months, in other words I don't wanna grow my hair due to the fact my bald spots are seen. I have been depressed since highschool with all the teasing and stuff, but now it affects me worse , I'm almost losing my self confidence and it affects my social life badly. I prefer staying alone at home and I seldom interact with people cuz I'm kinda frustrated. one more thing is. I'm the only one affected with this horrible condition in my family. the only people I know with this condition is my father and 2 uncles of mines. But it's normal cuz they're already in their 50's but among in my age group I'm the only one. please gimme ideas( I'm to shy and ashamed to share this with any of my family members)thanks in advance. I really appreciate it (btw I know my case might also be a the male pattern baldness, I just wanna know any remedy that can help stop it).. sorry for the bad grammar
I am not the only person having lot of hair fall but there are many, but suddenly found my treatment asap.
Hello folks. Iam a 24 year old male, and I have been having problems with my scalp and skin for the past year, gardually increasing/sustaining in severity. My hair is brittle. Right before a meal everyday, I can feel my scalp getting tighter untill I eat something and then in the hours afterward, it gets oily again. I had a very faint, musty, environment that creeped up into my bedroom a year ago, and I drew the conclusion that the carpet may have been the culprit. I replaced it and all of my clothes, and even my own bed that had been affected by just being around the the smell, and the smell went away... But even after getting ketokonazole as just a suggestion(no visible problems were confirmed) from my derm and, my hair all over my head gets so brittle that it is irritated to the touch and so is my facial hair. The doc's shampoo does help a little, but one other thing that I noticed is that when I use conditioner, my hair can stiffen even worse(which baffles me). I am getting another opinion from a leader in my area. Do you know of any mold allergies that can cause an allergic reaction and in some people hair loss? If so, can it be caused by just being in the air as the moldy smell, or is it just by contact? When my hair is dry, my head gets very tight. I am up a wall about this and whatever is causing it needs to cease.
arnavi,
I'm glad to hear that you had success with a natural solution and there is certainly nothing wrong with experimenting when it comes to non-life-threatening conditions like dandruff. But, it's also important to dandruff sufferers to know that quality dandruff shampoos like Nizoral can help manage their condition and, when used as directed, will not cause harm to hair follicles.

I am 34 yrs old ,suffering from Dandrruff for the past 20 yrs. Earlier I was using Cetavelon medicated shampoo. But later I tried lemon and then cover my head with a hot towel. It really worked. But these shampoos ,all contains chemicals and are bad for hair.
surbhi,
You may not be applying Nizoral often enough. Nizoral's directions say to "apply shampoo, generously lather, rinse thoroughly. Repeat use every 3-4 days for up to 8 weeks or as directed by a doctor." Thus, you should be applying the shampoo an average of 2 times per week for a minimum of two months.
Bear in mind that there are also two versions of Nizoral. In the United States, the 1% concentration is available over-the-counter while the more potent 2% solution is only available with a prescription. This may vary from country to country.
If you feel that you have already used Nizoral to its fullest effect, I suggest consulting with a dermatologist. There are other treatments available that may require a prescription.
Also keep in mind that it's extremely rare for normal dandruff to cause hair loss. If you feel that you have thinning hair, there may be other additional factors at play. Again, your doctor is the best one qualified to assess your condition and offer the most effective treatment.
