Do I Have To Use ATP Spray After A Hair Transplant?

I’m scheduled for a hair transplant in 5 days, but i’m wondering if should buy any special shampoos or sprays for my hair afterwards. My surgeon is selling ATP spray, but it’s quite expensive is it necessary?

Before we answer this question, let’s break down what ATP is and what it does. Adenisone triphosphate (ATP) is a compound consisting of three phosphate groups. These three phosphate groups are present in living tissue. ATP provides energy for physiological processes such as growth.

How Can ATP Help with Hair Restoration

Liposomal ATP spray is a solution that contains ATP in liposomes and is used to deliver ATP to tissue deprived of oxygen and blood supply. Oxygen and blood supply is essential for the survival of transplanted grafts.

Some surgeons believe that ATP maintains the energy charge of the cell, allowing grafts to remain viable. In addition, ATP is a potent vasodilator, which increases blood flow to the scalp.

Is ATP Spray Necessary?

A study published by Hair Transplant Network recommended surgeon Dr. Paul Rose, noted that ATP spray seems to push implanted hairs into the growth phase sooner. Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians Dr. Jerry Cooley also noted that using post-operative ATP spray led to fewer instances of low-growth.

That said, transplanted grafts do not require any special spray, lotion or pill to grow. ATP spray may be beneficial post-operatively but not necessary. Furthermore, the evidence online is anecdotal without any real clinical evidence to support the use of ATP. If your surgeon is willing to give it to you for free go ahead and try it, but don’t buy it.
