This question, from a member of our hair loss social community and discussion forums, was answered by “OrangeHair” – a representative for Coalition hair transplant surgeons Dr. Robert Dorin and Dr. Robert True:

I recently underwent hair transplant surgery, and I’m wondering how my new grafts will mature and change over time? Do transplanted hairs mature and become more natural as the newly implanted grafts grow? If so, what is the timeline like?

Generally around 3 – 6 months the new hairs emerge and can be a bit fine and “wispy” at first.

Then around 6 – 9 months, the new hair will sometimes take on a wiry almost coarse nature in texture.

Then, from about 10 – 14 months (with 12 months being the average) there should be an evolution into a more normalized texture and trajectory to the hair. This sequence varies, but a maturation and naturalization process does occur. If the hairs are transplanted properly and have been angulated and designed to lay together with minimal trauma, you should expect a very normal lay and appearance by around the 10 – 14 month mark (with 12 being average and some cases taking up to 18 months to fully mature).
