Over the last year I have consumed more caffeine than I ever have before and I have noticed my hair has gotten thicker, but does caffeine actually stop hair loss or is this just coincidence?

Unfortunately, caffeine itself is not likely to stop or prevent the further progression of androgenic alopecia (genetic hair loss) however, there have been studies to suggest that caffeine could stimulate hair growth. Additionally, according to researchers drinking a few more cups of coffee a day will have little no impact on hair loss, because scientists estimate 60 cups a day would be needed to potentially promote hair growth. However, this can be mitigated by applying caffeine to the scalp topically.

There may be some beneficial effects to applying caffeine topically according to researchers. The topical application of caffeine has been shown to stimulate hair growth however, this does not necessarily mean it will stop or prevent androgenic alopecia (genetic hair loss). Additionally, researchers have noted that very little clinical data exists and further studies are needed to confirm and establish the role of caffeine in managing androgenic alopecia (genetic hair loss).

Currently, there are two medications approved by the FDA to treat androgenic alopecia (genetic hair loss) Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride). Hair loss sufferers should continue to use these two medications because they are the only medications with proven results and extensive clinical data. While the studies sound promising for topical caffeine, there isn’t enough data to prove its efficacy. However, hair loss sufferers may add caffeine shampoos such as alpecin to their hair loss prevention regimen.
