What should women do if there is thinning hair all over the scalp and hair replacement surgery is not suitable?

Female hair loss is a bit more complicated since there are a number of things other than genetics that can cause it.   Have you been to a dermatologist to determine the reason for your condition?   In my opinion, this is a crucial step.   In many cases, as in cases of thinning hair all over the scalp (typically indicative of a hair loss referred to diffuse alopecia), hair growth can return to normal once the condition causing it is found and treated.   Typical causes of diffuse alopecia  include hormonal changes in the body, a thyroid condition, an iron deficiency, some medications such as anticoagulants, retinoids (including too much Vitamin A), and scalp conditions such as dermatitus or psorasis.   Many of these conditions can be treated and in many cases, baldness reversed.

In my opinion, consult with a dermatologist who can analyze your scalp and perform a series of test to determine the cause of your condition.   Only then can a proper hair loss treatment be recommended.

  • K,

In most cases, utilizing proven, preventive medications like finasteride/Propecia and minoxidil/Rogaine (https://www.hairrestorationnetwork.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?display=home) can help stabilize and prevent progressive hair loss. Rogaine (minoxidil) isn't a prescription medication, so you can purchase it on your own (see the above link to our online hair loss store), but you should seek the opinion of a medical professional and a prescription before utilizing finasteride (Propecia). If you have access, your primary care physician should be able to analyze your scalp, make the assessment, and give you a prescription.

Besides that, you probably should avoid excessive dying (while it's not necessarily going to accelerate the speed of your hair loss, it's not probably not great for the health of your hair in general). Additionally, besides proven, preventive medications, I wouldn't recommend (personally any home remedies (besides the basics - healthy diet, plenty of sleep, refraining from smoking, etc).

  • I have a question... Unfourtantely i lost my job and do not have insurance right now to go see a dermatogologist. I feel like my hair is thinning its down to about the middle of my back and feels significantly thinner than normal. I have had very bad dandruff for about a month, trying to treat that with various head and shoulder products and no success. I also recently but a semi permanent die on to cover some premature grays ( im only 25). I am freaking out 25 gray hairs and its falling out please help ! what should i do for some basic home remedies to find out what the problem is ?

  • Hair loss treatment seeker,

    Thanks for your comment.

Many women make the mistake in assuming their hair loss is genetic and start to using minoxidil right away or even preparing for a hair transplant. But if their hair loss is caused by non-genetic factors, their balding condition may be reversible by treating the condition. Hair transplant surgery may damage existing natural hair that would have returned on its own with proper medical treatment of the condition causing it. That's why it's crucial to get properly diagnosed by a dermatologist, trichologist, or hair restoration specialist.

    Best wishes,

    Bill
