What are the pre-operative instructions I should follow before my hair transplant?

Once you’ve selected a hair transplant doctor, It is best to get a detailed list of pre-op instructions directly from the clnic.   Below is a list of pre-operative instructions that I have received before my three hair transplant procedures.   Please note that hair restoration clinics will vary on some of these items, including variables of time.

  • Scalp Exercises: Do Scalp Exercises at least 1 month (preferably longer) prior  to  hair transplant surgery.
  • Products that thin the blood: Stop use of anything that thins the blood, including aspirin, multi-vitamins, and MSM (some people use this to speed up the hair growth process).
  • Rogaine: Stop use of Rogaine (minoxodil) prior to surgery.
  • Alcohol: Do not drink any alcohol for at least 1 to 2 weeks prior to surgery.   Get specifics on time frame from the clinic.
  • Diet: Eat a healthy and hardy breakfast the day of the hair transplant procedure.
  • Rest: Get plenty of rest the night before the hair transplant procedure.
  • Documentation: As early as possible (months before if you can), gather all travel documents and materials you will need if you are seeing an out of town hair transplant clinic.
  • RELAX!!!!: Try to do your best to keep anxiety and nerves down low.   One thing that really helped me was to ask my questions and share my feelings with veteran members on our hair restoration discussion forums.   It also helps to talk to and get support from close friends and family as they can be there to encourage you.

Most hair transplant clinics will tell you to avoid multi-vitamins as they can thin the blood. I'm not sure specifically about vitamin C though.
