This question, asked by a member of our Hair Loss Social Community and Discussion Forums, was answered by “The Hair Up There” – a consultant for Coalition hair transplant surgeons Dr. Robert True and Dr. Robert Dorin:

I suffer from diffuse hair loss, meaning I’m thinning in a non-patterned fashion (unlike those suffering from genetic male hair loss or “male pattern baldness”), and I’m wondering if hair transplant surgery is a treatment option? Should individuals with diffuse hair loss undergo hair transplantation?

The Hair Up There:

Diffuse thinning (either Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia/DUPA or Diffuse Patterned Alopecia/DPA) is tricky and every case is different.

This should be looked at by a hair restoration physician who can take a look at your specific situation and see if a hair transplant is a good option for you.

Without photos it’s very hard to say. If the donor area is too thin already then Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is most likely not a good option for you, but Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) could work; but again it depends on the situation and if it’s worth it in the long run. Schedule a consultation with a trusted hair transplant surgeon in person or send some photos for an online consultation to see where you stand.
