I know that hair loss is unpredictable. That being said, what if I have a hair transplant, and by the time Im 50 years old I end up becoming a level 7 on the norwood scale. Isn’t it possible that I could end up with a moat of scalp wrapping around my head between the top (transplanted hair) and bottom (sides and back)? Thanks.
This is a good question and it can be addressed in several ways.
It is true that hair loss is unpredictable however hair loss patterns can be projected/predicted (not 100% determined however) by a qualified hair transplant doctor in slightly older patients. This is yet another reason why younger hair loss sufferers may not be good candidates for a hair transplant – especially those who only just started losing hair.
This very concern is another reason why the use of donor hair is extremely important and must be used wisely. In my opinion, it is advisable to leave some donor hair in reserve in the event that future hair loss takes place.
That being said, multiple hair transplant sessions may be necessary in order to add hair to areas that are balding or bald. Most hair loss sufferers that undergo hair transplantation typically have to or want to go back for more to keep up with their hair loss or simply because of hair greed (where more hair may not be needed but is desirable).
To summarize, it is best to strategize a long term game plan with a qualified hair restoration physician in order to minimize the risk of receiving an unnatural looking hair transplant(s).
