I’ve read on your hair loss forum about the donor area which will never go bald. However, is there any way of telling exactly where this will be? I know it is at the back and sides of the scalp in a horseshoe shape however, recently I have noticed some guys that seem to have more hair loss than others, leaving them with a smaller quantity of available donor. If I did ever go ahead with hair transplant surgery I would want to be sure the donor area was an area that really would resist further balding. What reassurances can you offer?
Hair on the sides and back of the head is DHT resistant, thus is not impacted by genetic hair loss. To illustrate this, take the highest class of hereditary baldness on the norwood scale (level 7), and then look at the remaining hair. This area is referred to as the universal safe zone. But not all balding men will end up in this advanced stage of hair loss. For example, hair loss sufferers may only end up with thinning hair in the front leaving a greater amount of hair on the sides and the back. Hair outside the universal safe zone may still be considered safe if a patient has a well established hair loss pattern. These candidates are typically is further along in years.
In most cases, surgeons will only take hair from the universal safe zone for hair transplant surgery. However, in some cases, and with the patient’s permission, they may go outside the universal safe zone to achieve a more abundant supply of hair for transplantation. Surgeons will only take this risk if there is a slim chance of further hair loss in the area of strip harvesting.
Be sure to speak with a hair transplant surgeon you are considering about this issue and determine whether or not you are a candidate for hair restoration surgery.
