This question, asked by a member of our Hair Loss Social Community and Discussion Forums, was answered by Coalition hair transplant surgeon Dr. Glenn Charles:

What’s the general consensus on when you can return to your normal shower routine after a hair transplant? Is it usually one week or one month? Also, is it better to shower once per day or once every other day when you return to your normal shower routine? Once a day seems better to clean the grafts, but I’m afraid it might dry out the grafts.

Seven to ten days after hair restoration surgery you can return to your normal shower routine. By that time all the scabs should have fallen off and there is not much you can do to harm the follicular unit grafts.

Regarding shampooing, once a day is plenty. If you are concerned about the drying effect of over washing you might want to consider a sulfate-free shampoo.

  • Carlos,

This should not present a problem. The important thing is that the donor and recipient sites do not get infected and are allowed to heal.

After your surgery, your hair restoration physician should have provided you with a list of aftercare instructions indicating how and when to begin washing your hair again. If you feel that you have any reason to be concerned about the healing of your grafts, I suggest contacting your hair transplant surgeon.

    Best of luck!
