Earlier this week, multiple online sources reported that “American Hustle” actor Bradley Cooper is taking Propecia (finasteride) to prevent hair loss. According to reports, Cooper has a significant family history of hair loss and fears he will fall prey to the genetic condition.

Cooper, who turned 39 last month, believes a full head of hair is crucial for his “leading man” status, and does not want thinning hair or a receding hairline to jeopardize his Hollywood career. By age 39, an estimated 30% to 40% of men suffer from some level of androgenic alopecia (“male pattern baldness”), so Cooper’s angst about his hair may be realistic. Because finasteride is one of only two drugs – the other being Rogaine (minoxidil) – proven to safely treat male pattern hair loss, it seems like the actor is taking a proactive, efficient approach toward his potential thinning.

Patients interested in treating their own hair loss with drugs like Propecia or Rogaine should seek a consultation with a trusted hair restoration physician and ask about the medications. We wish Bradley the best of luck with his own alleged hair loss and hope the Propecia helps him maintain his star status for many years to come!
