Dr. Cooley, I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts on platelet rich plasma (PRP) in general. Do you find it responds better to certain types of hair loss? Are 6-7 month follow up visits optimal to maintain its effect?

I ask as I am 3 weeks away from a 2,000 graft follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant with the likelihood of having PRP as well. From my research, it works best on diffused cases. Would you agree? I’m a diffuser with most of my loss in the midscalp and forelock.

I’m commonly asked how long PRP (+/- ACell) lasts. I think it depends on the patient and if their balding is rapid or slow, if they are on Propecia (finasteride), Rogaine (minoxidil), etc.

Also, patients need to understand that the results of the treatment will vary from clinic to clinic, depending on what PRP system is used and the protocol the doctor follows. Having said all that, PRP seems like a good idea for you when you have your procedure. If your hair restoration physician recommends a booster at 6-7 months, I would follow their recommendations.

PRP targets miniaturizing hairs so yes, it’s particularly good for diffuse thinners.
