I want to have a hair transplant, but I would like to know if taking Propecia is required after surgery?

Hair transplant surgery is a standalone procedure and does not require non-surgical solutions for the new hair to grow and mature.  However, Androgenic alopecia  or genetic hair loss is a progressive condition. Therefore, in order to ensure hair transplant results have longevity it is advised for patients to take preventive measures.

Individuals with thinning hair should seriously consider hair loss drugs such as Propecia (finasteride) and Rogaine (minoxidil).  While no non-surgical solution can cure balding, these treatments are very good at slowing down, stopping or even reversing the natural progression of male pattern baldness.

Without medication, or if nonsurgical hair loss solutions don’t work, any hair that hasn’t been transplanted may continue thinning.  Thus, patients may require several hair restoration procedures in order to maintain their appearance.

Please note that a small percentage of men may experience side effects when using Propecia or even Rogaine. Thus, you are encouraged to research any hair loss drug you are considering and discuss it with your doctor.
