Is Rogaine (5% Minoxidil) for Men Safe for Female Hair Loss?
I just bought Rogaine 5% liquid solution. Please advise if it’s OK for ladies to use it as I read on the package that it is meant for men. Also, I only wash my hair in the morning and I heard that the solution will make hair look greasy. Can I apply it only at night on an unwashed scalp? Can a positive result still be seen applying it once a day?
Although 5% minoxidil is marketed for male hair loss sufferers, it is perfectly safe for females with thinning hair as well. In fact, many hair restoration physicians recommend Rogaine 5% for their female hair loss patients. However, it’s important to know that with the higher concentration comes a greater risk of side effects. For women, the side effect of most concern may be the potential for increased facial hair. Other side effects may include itching and scalp irritation among others.
Applying minoxidil once per day may be nearly as effective as twice per day. But, it is best applied to a clean, dry scalp. Residue from styling products may impede absorption. Lastly, it is true that the liquid can leave hair with a greasy appearance. If that concerns you, try Rogaine Foam. It is fast drying, non-greasy and it does not irritate the skin.
