This question, from a member of our hair loss social community and discussion forums, was answered by Coalition hair transplant surgeon Dr. Glenn Charles:

I underwent a hair transplant a couple of days ago. I had significant native hair pre-HT. I had opted for shaving my hair before the procedure. Though I knew there would be some shock loss of the native hair, I wanted to know by when the native hair starts growing back. I am not concerned about the transplanted hair as I know they will take approximately 8 months to show some measurable signs of growth.

The native hair that does not experience shock loss will start growing immediately and the hair loss that does occur from shock in the first few weeks should start growing again in 3 to 5 months.

I try to tell patients that, after the initial healing process is over, to just try and forget about the hair restoration procedure for 3 to 4 months. Don’t drive yourself crazy. Staring in the mirror does not make hair growth appear faster. Go about your normal life and just know that something positive is going to happen down the road.
