Propecia (Finasteride) can help hair loss sufferers maintain their hair and sometimes even help them grow back hair they have lost. Hair regrowth should be considered a bonus, however, as Propecia is primarily a “maintenance” drug, enabling the user to stave off further loss and thickening wilting and dying hairs ravaged by DHT.

This chart illustrates hair counts maintained by men using Propecia over a span of 5 years compared to users taking a placebo (sugar pill) and users taking a combination of Propecia and placebo.

The tested groups are:

  • Users that took only Propecia for 5 years
  • Users that took a placebo for 1 year then Propecia for 4 years
  • Users that took Propecia for 1 year, a placebo for 1 year, and Propecia for 3 years
  • Users that took a placebo for 5 years.

The study shows that Propecia users consistently maintained higher hair counts using Propecia than with the placebo. The users that toggled between the two are clearly shown as having higher hair counts while using Propecia than while using the placebo when compared to the baseline hair count.
