This question comes from a member of our hair loss social community and discussion forums:

I underwent Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant surgery 3 months ago. This weekend, I made the mistake of letting a friend “buzz” my head. He was very rough with the clippers, and I’m concerned he damaged my newly implanted grafts. Can a rough haircut 3 months after surgery damage the follicular unit grafts?

The follicular unit grafts “anchor” and become permanent 7-10 days after they are placed. After this point, it’s very hard to damage the grafts.

A rough hair cut 3 months after placement would not affect the grafts. It might make the scalp red or slightly swollen, but won’t hurt the grafts underneath. Most of the grafts should shed by this point, and you’ll probably start seeing some very fine new hairs growing back. This is another sign that the grafts are permanent and won’t be harmed by “rough” haircuts.

We do recommend running these issues by your hair transplant surgeon. Most clinics have well-defined post-operative instructions, and may provide better information about activities that could damage grafts in the post-operative period.

  • I am 3.5 weeks FUT post-op and I understand I can get a haircut but can I cut the actual new hair? The hair in the recipient area that is supposed to fall out on its own? Is this safe? Just trying to be very careful but I think if I cut those it will be much less obvious that I just got a transplant.
