This question, from a member of the Hair Restoration Social Community and Discussion Forums, was answered by recommended hair restoration physician Dr. William Lindsey:

I’m experiencing sebaceous cysts in the recipient area approximately 6 months post-op. One or two cysts did come up one or two months after  my hair transplant but I didn’t take it too seriously. At the moment I have 2 larger ones in the balding area. Has anyone experienced this and how did you cure it?

Cysts can occur spontaneously in lots of people not only those treating hair loss surgically. I take 2 or 3 a week off of patients that a nearby dermatologist sends over. Some families are just very prone to cysts. Cysts can also occur after trauma, either incidental or surgical. Back in the old days of hair transplantation, I think cysts were more common as bigger minigrafts were sometimes placed at an angle and skin grew under the nearby skin causing a cyst.

I specifically discuss cysts as part of the consent process prior to hair transplant surgery and I have not had a cyst come back to me since at least 2003; and even then I am not sure it was from hair restoration.

So, while it is one of the most common risks, it is not that common. Stop back in to your hair transplant surgeon for a check.
