I had a hair transplant for female pattern baldness 2 1/2 weeks ago. It is healing well, but I seem to have lost much of the hair that was already there &, of course, no new hair will grow for a while.

I have read different things online about how typical this is after surgery. At this point I have less hair than before the surgery. Is this normal?

It’s not uncommon for hair to appear thinner during the first three months or so after surgical hair restoration. Shock loss in the hair transplant recipient area is always a risk when placing grafts around existing hair. In male patients, this risk may be mitigated through the use of Propecia (finasteride). However, this is not an option for female hair loss sufferers.

The good news is that female hair transplant recipients normally regrow hair affected by shock loss. You may find Rogaine (minoxidil) helps with hair growth during this time but it will take between 6 months and one year before you’ll see significant improvement.
