This question, asked by a member of our Hair Loss Social Community and Discussion Forums, was answered by Coalition hair restoration physician Dr. Timothy Carman:

Several months ago, I underwent hair transplant surgery, and two weeks after the operation I developed red, sore bumps on my scalp that won’t go away. Is this normal? Should I be worried? What is causing this?

Most likely, it is due to either new hairs emerging (which can occur from 3 months to 12 months post-operatively, and usually last no more than 1 week each), or ingrown hairs (same time period, but may last much longer/become chronic).

I wouldn’t be concerned unless you begin to see drainage, as this may be due to folliculitis – which is a more generalized infection, and one which, unlike the others, would require a short course of topical or oral antibiotics (irritation due to growth would respond to a warm compress, for instance).

Either way, you should contact your hair transplant surgeon and ask for his/her professional opinion on the matter.
