The “Stick and Place” Technique

The “stick and place” technique describes the process in which a hair restoration physician and or technicians make a recipient site incision and then immediately places the follicular unit graft into the incision. This differs from many hair transplant clinics where the hair transplant doctor makes all or most of the incisions in advance and then the physician and or technicians then place the hair grafts into these previously made incisions.

By placing grafts immediately into a fresh incision that has not had time to contract or coagulate incisions can potentially be smaller relative to the size of the typical graft. The stick and place technique performed at both Dr. Simmon’s  and Dr. McKenzie’s  clinics are actually performed by experienced hair technicians who follow the design created by the physician. However, both hair transplant surgeons often do the sticking and placing of grafts in the critical hairline areas.

I believe that the stick and place technique can yield excellent results when performed by well trained and supervised medical technicians. However, I found both the incisions made by the 19 gauge needles and the grafts to be a bit larger than what I typically see at leading hair restoration clinics who have fully implemented ultra refined follicular unit grafting.
