I’m twenty years old and already have aggressive hair loss. I’m imbetween a Norwood 5 and 6, and i’m losing hair rapidly. The idea of wearing a wig doesn’t sound appealing, but I don’t know if I’m a candidate for a hair transplant. What should someone in my shoes do, should I get a hair system or hair transplant?
There are pros and cons to getting both a hair transplant and a hair system. I can’t decide for you, but I can give you enough information to make an informed decision. First of all, getting surgery does not stop hair loss. If you’re losing hair rapidly, you need to treat the hair loss with preventive medication such as finasteride and minoxidil. Stabilizing your hair loss is crucial.
Hair transplant surgery under the age of 25 is not recommended. Exceptions are depending on your personal circumstances. For you, with aggressive hair loss at such a young age, the concern would be whether you have enough safe donor hair for surgery. Another thing you should consider is the fact that you will need more than one procedure. In all likelihood, you will need three, maybe even four, hair transplants. That’s something you should consider if you’re on a limited budget.
Now, as for hair systems, the idea of wearing a ‘rug,’ as some say, doesn’t sound too appealing, especially for you- a young man. But the big benefit of wearing a system is instant results. You don’t have to wait for the hair to grow, as you do with surgery, which takes twelve months. On the contrary, with a hair system, you can look like you’re not balding at all in a matter of minutes. Hair systems require maintenance. If you’re active, you’ll need to change out the system more often.
Unfortunately, unless you buy an expensive hair system, it doesn’t look natural in most cases. You will have to pay top dollar to a quality hair replacement center. Considering the maintenance costs, the time and energy to keep up with the hair system, and the possible embarrassment from being caught, the idea doesn’t sound as appealing. Surgical hair restoration is always a better option if you are a candidate. The problem is you might not be a candidate.
