Is there any harm in combing your hair gently one month after a hair transplant? It seems like a number of the transplanted hairs are falling out – is this normal?
Thank you for your inquiry,
At one month post-op, it is safe to brush and comb your hair however you like as the follicular unit grafts are secured firmly in place at around 10 days after hair restoration surgery.
The hair shedding of the transplanted hair grafts is normal and typically occurs between 2 to 4 weeks. Most likely most to all of the transplanted follicular unit grafts will fall out. Don’t be alarmed as this is normal. Though the hair sheds, the hair follicle is securely in place. The hair follicles goes through a 3 to 5 month resting phase before the start of any new hair growth. During this resting (catagen) phase, you will look like you didn’t have hair transplantation done at all. Between 3 to 5 months however, is when the transplanted hairs will start to grow back. But it is a slow gradual process. My advice to you is to avoid looking in the mirror every chance you get to see if there is any difference in your hair. You won’t wake up one morning and see a drastic change – however, as a three time hair transplant patient, there were small differences I would notice by scrutinizing it every day. But scrutinizing it too much may cause unnecessary anxiety. Between 6 to 9 months, there should be some really good hair growth. Between 12 to 18 months is when a hair transplant is considered mature.
