I currently use the 5% minoxidil (Rogaine) liquid solution to treat my hair loss. However, I apply the solution in the morning and quickly need to dry and style my hair afterward in order to get to work. Because of this, I’ve been using a blow dryer to both dry and style my hair. However, I’m wondering if it is okay to use a blow dryer after applying minoxidil? Will this make the treatment less effective?

Some time back, I read that the company responsible for Rogaine does not recommend using a blow dryer after applying the product. They state that the heat may cause evaporation of the solution. Frankly, I cannot find another source to verify this information. Other sources claim it is okay to blow dry on “low heat,” but most recommend blow drying the hair first and then applying the minoxidil.

Because of this, it seems like it may be best to avoid using the blow dryer after applying the product. You could try applying the product at night or switch from the liquid to the foam solution – as it may dry quicker. Remember that it takes approximately 4 hours on the scalp for minoxidil to completely absorb, and any disruption during this period (including evaporation from the blow dryer) could decrease its effectiveness. Keep in mind that you can always discuss any hair loss medication concerns (even non-prescription medications) with a trusted hair restoration physician as well.
