How important is it that a doctor close the hair transplant donor site with a two-layer closure? From what I have heard, this minimizes   tension, thus creating the best possible healing environment for the scar.

This insightful answer was provided  by Dr. William Lindsey of Mclean, VA who is one of our recommended hair restoration physicians.

For me, a two-layer trichophytic closure is important in getting the best scars we can. My scars are often, although not always, pretty nice after maturing.

Other hair restoration physicians do fine work with and without that same technique. It’s important for the hair transplant patient to ask what works for their doctor. If the patient and doctor are “on the same page”, the technique itself isn’t important. I get better results with the technique that I use, that is why I use it. But another physician may get equally good results with one layer of staples.

As part of our surgical consultation we usually show several scars at 1 week, 3 months, 6 months, and one year post-op.   Our portfolio has some fantastic scars and some average ones too. Its important to know the range of outcomes whether with scars, hair growth, or any medical hair loss treatment in order to make an informed decision.
