I am a 50 year old male with a receding hairline, not sure where on the scale I am, but I would like to have the hair line thickened and brought down a bit. I can live with my condition quite fine, but only if the costs are not too high, I would seriously consider having a hair transplant.

There seem to be so many clinics and doctors out there and their pricing structure seems to hide the real costs involved. Some make statements like $3.00 per graft, does this mean a follicular unit, or is it a bunch of hairs in the same group? If that is the case, then the so called $3.00 per graft could mean thousands of dollars for just a small procedure.

The question – what does a hair transplant cost – is probably one of the most asked questions about [tag]hair transplants[/tags] and does not really have a simple answer. A hair transplant is very “patient dependant” and there are many variables that will determine the final cost. One of which is your scale of baldness, measured with the Hamilton/Norwood Scale.

A hair transplant surgeon that has “artistic” skills will be able to achieve the look you are describing with a fairly small procedure, say 1,000 to 1,500 grafts comprising of between 1,600 to 2,500 individual hairs.

Again, this is highly dependant on the look and density you wish to achieve. We have created a very useful “graft calculator” on the Hair Transplant Network which will allow you to set the desired density and select the areas of the scalp where you feel you would like to have the procedure. Given a particular clinic’s hair transplant prices, you will then be able to estimate your hair transplant costs. However, do realise that this is purely a tool for estimating the procedure and is not an absloute reference.

Getting back to the hair transplant price issue, the prices hair transplant clinics charge can vary widely. Costs per graft vary from $3.00 to $8.00. Prices will also vary depending on the size of the procedure, with the price per additional graft going down as the size of the session increases.  There is  a good discussion on the cost of hair transplant on our  discusssion forum. Price is typically  not  a good benchmark for quality or for value. Often the most talented and ethical surgeons  charge the least.

A hair transplant is a very personal experience and choosing a surgeon should not be taken lightly or governed by price. You will live with the results for the rest of your life and a botched procedure will leave you much less happy than not having had one at all.

Good hair transplant surgeons are able to generally “predict” you natural rate of hair loss and will perform a hair transplant with care, in anticipation of your continued loss, so that the results will still look natural and cosmetically acceptable in the years to come. Given your condition, you could expect to pay around $5,000. Again, this is depending on the surgeon’s fee structure.

Best wishes,

  • Jeremy,

The cost of your hair transplant will vary depending upon several factors including but not limited to; your degree of hair loss, your hair restoration goals and the clinic you choose.

In the United States, the average fee for follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is $4 to $6 per graft. In order to help you estimate the number of grafts you need to achieve your desired results you can use our interactive graft calculator. In addition, I highly suggest viewing our prescreened quality hair restoration physicians and scheduling one or more free online consultations.

    Best of luck!
