Why Is the Hair Loss Treatment Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) So Expensive?

The following response was posted to our Hair Loss Social Community and Discussion Forums by Dr. Jerry Cooley who is a member of the Coalition of Independent Hair Restoration Physicians:

Can anyone explain why the hair loss treatment PRP is so costly? I’ve heard this can cost near a thousand dollars. Admittedly, I don’t know much about the procedure, but it seems spinning blood down and administering some injections to the bald scalp is not exactly high tech, nor too labor intensive. So, where is the cost coming from? Thanks in advance.

It all depends on exactly what the hair restoration clinic performing the procedure is doing. If the clinic is using a cheap centrifuge that wasn’t designed for platelet rich plasma (PRP), it should not be expensive. But, it will not produce good platelet concentrates and the results will not be that good.

We use a system that produces >5X platelet concentrates and the cost of each disposable kit is significant. Furthermore, there is almost $500 worth of ACell in each of our treatments.

I’ve developed a rough sense for who will benefit and who will not, so I try to be careful about who we perform it on to make sure the expense is justified.
